BioSolar’s 2008 announcement described pilot manufacturing runs of BioBacksheet, a roll-form, bio-based film intended for use as the backsheet in photovoltaic modules. What is BioSolar’s BioBacksheet?
BioBacksheet is an industrial film designed to serve as the rear, or backsheet, layer in a conventional solar module. A backsheet sits on the bottom-most side of the panel assembly, where it provides electrical insulation and protection from environmental exposure. BioSolar described its film as a roll-form material for direct use in module lamination and roll-to-roll assembly systems.
The product’s stated differentiator was its use of materials derived from renewable plant sources in place of petroleum-based plastics. BioSolar aimed to reduce solar-module cost per watt while meeting the thermal and durability demands of existing crystalline-silicon and some thin-film manufacturing processes. Those were product aims; the available records do not establish independently audited lifecycle impacts or cost savings.
What did the 2008 pre-production announcement mean?
The November 10, 2008 EE Times report concerned narrow pilot runs used to identify manufacturing issues and assess the material in sample modules. CEO Dr. David Lee said the pilot rolls were about one foot wide, compared with five- or six-foot widths expected in normal manufacturing. The company planned to measure physical properties, make and test sample PV modules, then repeat runs as needed before attempting wider commercial production.

That sequence matters: the announcement was about learning and process refinement ahead of scale-up. It did not say that mass production had already started. The report expected commercial production within months, but an expectation is not confirmation that production or sales reached that stage on schedule.
How did BioSolar’s production and qualification timeline develop?
- 2008: BioSolar announced pre-production runs to evaluate the material and manufacturing process before full-scale production.
- 2009: A product-line report described BioBackSheet-L and BioBackSheet-C as nearing qualification or in pre-production; the moisture-barrier BioBackSheet-A remained in late research and development.
- February 2011: BioSolar’s later SEC filing says its latest mono-layer BioBacksheet obtained UL material certification. The company said it was designed for conventional crystalline-silicon modules and certain thin-film modules.
- July 30, 2026: PVTIME reported that BioSolar had completed technical UL certifications, including recognition for a 130°C Relative Thermal Index, and was ready to accept high-volume orders. This is a reported readiness claim, not independently audited evidence of shipment volumes or sustained commercial production.
Certification, production readiness, and actual market supply are separate milestones. The cited record documents certification claims and a 2026 report of readiness for orders, but does not establish production volume, sales, market share, or current stock availability.

Who is BioBacksheet for, and can consumers buy it?
BioBacksheet is a B2B solar-module material, not a consumer solar panel or a retail accessory. BioSolar’s filings describe sales routes aimed at photovoltaic module manufacturers, manufacturers’ representatives, and licensing partners in target markets. A module maker or materials-technology licensee is therefore the relevant prospective buyer. The available record does not confirm a consumer retail channel or provide a current ordering link.

- Thermal rating and durability: Confirm ratings and long-term performance evidence for the intended module design and operating conditions.
- Moisture and environmental protection: Check barrier performance against the project’s requirements; BioSolar’s 2009 product-line account said its A version, which emphasized a moisture barrier, was still in late R&D at that time.
- Manufacturing compatibility: Verify suitability for the specific lamination or roll-to-roll equipment and process settings, rather than relying only on a general compatibility claim.
- Certification scope: Confirm which product construction and intended use are covered by the relevant UL documentation. A material certification or thermal index recognition is not, on its own, proof of every finished module’s certification.
- Commercial terms and supply: Obtain current specifications, pricing, order quantities, delivery commitments, and evidence of available production capacity directly from BioSolar or an authorized commercial partner.
