If an automated license plate reader (ALPR) appears to have linked your vehicle or plate to the wrong event, contact the organization that issued the notice or made the enforcement contact, follow its stated response process, and keep the notice and relevant evidence. If another vehicle may be using a copy of your plate, report suspected cloning to police as well as notifying the issuer. Deadlines and correction routes depend on the jurisdiction and type of record, so use the instructions on the actual notice.

First, identify what is being disputed

A reader alert or citation is not, by itself, proof that the vehicle in a record is yours. A discrepancy could involve a plate read or data-entry error, a mistaken match between a read and a vehicle or record, or another vehicle using a duplicated plate. These are possibilities to investigate, not diagnoses you can make from the notice alone.

Work out where the disputed item lives, because that determines who can address it:

  • A notice or citation: Start with the organization that issued it. That may be a police or speed-camera office, a parking agency, or a toll operator.
  • A police ALPR record: Contact the relevant police service or agency. In the UK, the Home Office describes an enquiry route for National ANPR Service data, but this does not guarantee access to or correction of every police record.
  • A driver or vehicle record: Contact the motor-vehicle agency or court responsible for the record. A citation issuer may not control a separate government driving record.

What to do after receiving a notice or enforcement contact

  1. Read the notice and note the response details. Record the issuer, reference number, event date and location, response method, and deadline. Do not ignore the notice while you investigate. The applicable deadline and appeal process are those stated by the issuer for your jurisdiction and notice type.
  2. Compare the alleged vehicle with yours. Check the registration and any make, model, color, image, or other description supplied. Note specifically what does not match, such as a different vehicle in the image or evidence that your vehicle was elsewhere.
  3. Preserve useful evidence. Keep a copy of the notice and any relevant photographs, travel, work, parking, toll, or service records that may corroborate where your vehicle was. These are practical examples, not evidence requirements that apply in every jurisdiction or case.
  4. Contact the issuer promptly. Explain what appears wrong and ask which appeal route and evidence it accepts. For a mistaken UK speed-camera notice, Police.uk directs recipients to the speed-camera team. In California, the DMV says an erroneous parking or toll citation claim must be resolved with the issuing parking agency; the DMV cannot remove the citation without that agency’s release or payment.
  5. Keep a record of your response. Save correspondence and proof of submission, then follow up through the issuer’s stated channel. If the matter could lead to a court appearance, vehicle seizure, registration restriction, or another serious consequence, consider qualified local legal advice.

If you suspect another vehicle is using your plate

A plate that appears on a vehicle unlike yours, or an alleged event that you can credibly show your vehicle could not have attended, may raise concern about plate cloning. A mismatch alone does not establish cloning, but if you suspect it, report it to police and obtain an incident or crime reference number if one is issued.

Also contact the organization that issued the notice. Police.uk advises suspected cloning victims to request cancellation from the issuer and provide supporting evidence where available, including a police reference number. Keep the police report and the issuer’s dispute as separate steps: one reports suspected misuse; the other challenges the notice.

If the disputed item is already on a government record

Ask which organization supplied or maintains the specific record and what correction process applies. The route for a citation may differ from the route for a conviction or driver-history entry. For example, California DMV says a traffic violation or conviction on a driver record should be addressed through the court or its Driver License Record Correction Request process; its guidance separately directs parking and toll citation disputes to the issuing agency.

For UK National ANPR Service records, the Home Office’s data-subject notice describes an enquiry route and the possibility of rectifying errors. It does not establish a right to disclosure or correction of every police record, and it does not cover private parking, toll, or other commercial readers.

What an ALPR record can—and cannot—establish

The Home Office’s National ANPR standards for policing and law enforcement, version 3.5 (July 2026), apply to UK law-enforcement use of the National ANPR Capability, not to every reader worldwide. The standards say: “ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) data must accurately represent VRMs of all vehicles with correctly represented EU and Schengen Community number plates.” They define a read record as including the vehicle registration mark, time, location, and camera identifier. Those fields can help identify the event to challenge, but they do not by themselves resolve a dispute about whether the read or associated record is correct.

No broadly applicable rate of ALPR misidentification is established by the official guidance cited here. Retention also varies by system: the DVLA says data from its ANPR system for untaxed vehicles is stored for up to 18 months. That figure is specific to the DVLA system and should not be assumed to describe police or commercial systems elsewhere.

Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner issued police-focused ALPR guidance on 16 December 2024 addressing privacy practices such as governance, public notice, and limiting retention of non-hit data. The page says it is under review following 2026 amendments to Ontario public-sector privacy laws, so check its current status before relying on it for a current legal requirement.

Should you replace your plates?

Not solely because a reader may have made a mistake. California DMV’s replacement guidance concerns plates that are lost, stolen, damaged, or illegible; replacement is not a general remedy for an erroneous reader result. If you believe plates were stolen or copied, report suspected cloning to police and contact the relevant registration authority for instructions that apply where you live.
