1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor Wii games played on a PC through Dolphin, a real Wii Remote is usually the better choice when a game depends on its original motion or pointer controls. A PC gamepad is a better fit if you prefer familiar buttons and sticks, and some motion-sensing controllers can supply motion data to Dolphin. The right choice depends on the specific game and how you configure its controls; there is no universal winner.
Wii Remote vs. PC gamepad at a glance
| What matters | Real Wii Remote | PC gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Motion controls | Direct physical match for games designed around Wii Remote movement, subject to the game and setup. | Buttons and axes can be mapped to an emulated Wii Remote. A supported motion-sensing controller may also pass motion data to Dolphin. |
| Pointing | The original pointer uses infrared sensing with a Sensor Bar. Placement and environmental light can affect it. | Dolphin has documented simulated infrared pointer input derived from gyro and accelerometer data for supported configurations; this does not mean every gamepad or game will behave the same way. |
| Setup | Connect the remote to Dolphin over Bluetooth and configure its Wii Remote slot as Real Wii Remote. A desktop without Bluetooth may need an adapter. | Select an emulated Wii Remote and map the gamepad’s buttons and axes. Motion passthrough depends on the controller and configuration. |
| Best fit | Games where original Wii Remote handling or game-specific motion behavior is the priority. | Games that work well with mapped buttons and sticks, or use a motion controller you already have and can configure. |
These are practical distinctions drawn from Dolphin’s controller documentation and its October 2019 feature report, not results from comparative controller testing.
What makes the Wii Remote different?
A Wii Remote combines buttons with motion input, and many Wii games build their control scheme around pointing or movement rather than treating the controller as a conventional pad. Dolphin supports a physical Wii Remote as well as an emulated Wii Remote, but mapping a gamepad to the emulated option does not automatically reproduce the original motion response or feel.
Pointing and motion sensing are related but distinct. The original Wii pointer relies on infrared sensing and a Sensor Bar. Nintendo’s pointer troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the bar’s connection and placement and considering bright light, sunlight, or nearby infrared sources. Dolphin has also described simulated pointer input from a controller’s gyroscope and accelerometer for supported configurations. Whether that alternative is suitable depends on the controller, configuration, and game.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Choose a controller based on the game
Choose a real Wii Remote for original motion or pointer handling
If the game’s intended controls depend on Wii Remote movement or pointing, a real remote is the most direct hardware match. Games may also require an attachment such as a Nunchuk, so check the individual title rather than assuming the remote alone is enough. Nintendo’s Wii U accessory information lists Wii Remotes and related accessories but cautions that accessories do not work with every game or application.
Choose a PC gamepad for familiar buttons and sticks
A conventional gamepad can be mapped to an emulated Wii Remote in Dolphin, which can be convenient when the game is playable through button and axis inputs. That mapping is not a guarantee that every motion-heavy control scheme will feel natural or behave identically to a real remote.

Consider a motion-sensing controller only after checking support
Dolphin’s October 2019 report described motion-data passthrough from the DualShock 3, DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch controllers, and Steam Controller, including gyro- and accelerometer-based simulated pointer input in the described feature. That report is historical, not a current compatibility guarantee for every controller, operating system, Dolphin version, or game. Check the current Dolphin controller guide for the configuration path and verify that the controller you intend to use exposes the input you need.
Configure the controller in Dolphin
Use a physical Wii Remote
- Make sure the PC has Bluetooth. Dolphin notes that a desktop may need a USB or PCIe Bluetooth adapter if it does not have built-in support; an adapter is not guaranteed to work with every computer or Bluetooth stack.
- Open Dolphin’s controller configuration and set the relevant Wii Remote slot to Real Wii Remote. Dolphin’s guide describes this option for a real remote connected to the PC over Bluetooth.
- Do not pair the remote through the operating system’s native Bluetooth settings. Dolphin warns that operating-system handling may interfere with the emulator’s connection.
- If the game uses a Nunchuk or another attachment, connect the required accessory and confirm the title’s control requirements.
Dolphin documents support for up to four real Wii Remotes at once. That is a software capability, not a guarantee that a particular PC’s Bluetooth hardware or game setup will support every arrangement equally well.

Use a gamepad as an emulated Wii Remote
- In Dolphin’s controller configuration, choose an emulated Wii Remote for the slot used by the game.
- Select the connected gamepad as the input device, then assign its buttons and axes to the Wii Remote controls the game needs.
- For a motion-sensing controller, check the available motion-input options and configure them separately from button mapping. Availability and behavior depend on the controller and setup.
- Test the controls in the game. If a required pointer or motion action is missing or awkward, consider a real Wii Remote or another supported input path.
When a Sensor Bar or another accessory matters
A Sensor Bar is relevant when using an infrared pointer arrangement, but it is not automatically required for every Dolphin configuration: Dolphin has documented simulated pointer input for supported motion-controller setups. Nintendo’s Sensor Bar guidance gives a 1-to-3-foot recommended distance for the Wii U GamePad’s built-in Sensor Bar while playing Wii Mode. That figure applies to that specific Wii U arrangement, not to all PC setups.
- Nunchuk: Use it when the game or control scheme requires the attachment; it is not needed for every title.
- Sensor Bar: Consider it for a physical infrared pointer setup. Placement and light sources can affect pointing.
- Bluetooth adapter: Consider one if the PC lacks Bluetooth, while checking that the adapter and Bluetooth stack suit the system.
- Mayflash Wireless Sensor DolphinBar: Its manual describes connecting a Wii Remote Plus to a PC and provides keyboard/mouse, game-controller, and Wii Remote controller-emulator modes. The manual establishes those described functions, not current stock or compatibility with every present-day operating system.
Check the exact game’s controller requirements
Controller needs vary by title. Nintendo’s Wii game controller information explains that supported controls differ, so consult the specific game’s compatible-controller details before choosing hardware. A controller or accessory being usable in some Wii games does not establish that it works in the game you want to play.

- ABXY Layout Switch: Press B + Minus + Plus to swap between PC and Switch modes. Features: 1000Hz polling rate, RGB lighting, turbo. Note: designed without mic jack or gyro sensor
Practical decision: start with the game’s control requirements. If it depends on Wii Remote motion or infrared pointing, try a real remote and the relevant setup. If it mainly needs buttons and sticks, map a PC gamepad in Dolphin. If you want motion from a non-Wii controller, verify the current Dolphin options for that particular device rather than assuming motion passthrough is universal.
