To find out whether an automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera is operating nearby, check the official police, sheriff, and other relevant agency websites for a camera map, inventory, program page, or transparency portal. Search using several terms—“ALPR,” “automatic license plate reader,” “automated license plate reader,” and vendor names such as Flock—because agencies use different labels. If public information does not show locations or current status, ask the agency for its existing records.
Start with official local agency sources
Search the names of your city and county alongside terms such as “ALPR,” “automatic license plate reader,” “automated license plate reader,” “camera locations,” “transparency portal,” and any vendor name you know. Start with the police department and sheriff’s office; check relevant state agencies as well. An agency may publish an ALPR program page, fixed-camera map or inventory, vendor transparency portal, policy, or public-records contact.
Do not assume one agency’s page covers every system in the area. A city map may not include county or state equipment, neighboring-agency systems, mobile readers, or systems run by private entities. Check which agency operates the system and what the published information says it includes.
Read maps and portals for their scope and date
A current map or location list that identifies the jurisdiction and the camera type is the clearest public evidence of specific sites. Other portals may show only camera counts, policies, participating organizations, system searches, or usage information. A portal that confirms an agency’s program does not necessarily confirm that a particular camera is currently operating at a particular location.

- Compatibility-- Only Work With ONWOTE TD Series NVR (PNT-808, PNA-8016-T, PNT-1232).
- LPR-- License Plate Recognition IP Network PoE Camera.
- 4MP Resolution-- 2592×1520 @30fps for sharp and fluid video.
- 1/1.8" Low-Light Image Sensor-- Ensuring clear images even in dim conditions.
- 8-32mm Motorized Varifocal Lens @F1.6 for adjustable field of view.
- Geographic and agency coverage: Which department or jurisdictions does the information cover?
- Equipment coverage: Does it list fixed roadside cameras, mobile readers in vehicles, partner systems, or only some of these?
- Location detail: Does it name sites, show a map, or publish only counts or aggregated activity?
- Currency: When was the inventory or policy dated, and how often is the portal updated?
- Supporting information: Does it link to the governing policy, data-sharing information, or a records-request channel?
For example, Henrico County Police Division says its linked portal’s usage statistics are updated daily, and Arvada Police Department says its portal updates daily. A daily update schedule is useful context, but it does not by itself establish that every underlying record is complete or current. Check the inventory date and contact the agency if current operation matters.
Check fixed, mobile, partner, and private systems
A fixed-camera map may not describe every ALPR system an agency uses. Look for separate information about mobile readers mounted on vehicles and any regional partner access. Henrico County Police Division’s August 17, 2026 policy discusses fixed and mobile systems and says private entities can include homeowners’ associations, gated communities, shopping malls, businesses, and places of worship. That policy language identifies possible categories; it does not establish that any particular private entity has a camera operating near you.

- 2-MP 1/2.8" CMOS image sensor, low luminance, and high definitionimage. Outputs max. 2MP (1920×1080) @25/30 fps.
- 5 mm–60 mm motorized lens, Built-in IR LED, and the max. illumination distance is 150 m (492.13 ft) (IR) . For 50ft-170ft , use as LPR or long distance monitoring.
Washington’s Attorney General maintains a page listing agency ALPR registration submissions and policies. The office says it has not independently verified agencies’ submitted certifications, so treat a listing as an agency submission rather than independent confirmation of current operation.
Ask for existing records when details are missing
Contact the agency’s public-information officer or records custodian, or use the applicable state or local public-records process. Ask for records rather than asking the agency to create a new map or explain a system. Depending on the jurisdiction, useful existing records may include:

- 16MP UHD & COLOR NIGHT VISION: Featuring two 4K image sensors, this dual-lens camera brings 16 UHD clarity to you, ensuring no small detail goes unnoticed. The F1.6 super aperture and 1/2.7'' CMOS sensor enable greater light intake, while 6x infrared LED lights unveil all night details up to 100ft.
- 180° PANORAMIC VIEW & MOTION TRACK: The dual-image stitching algorithms, coupled with 4-core SoC, create 180° panoramic views with less distortion & fewer blind spots. Thanks to the Motion Track feature that displays the complete movement of the target over time in one picture, you can save the hassle of viewing the entire video to find suspicious moments.
- SMART DETECTION & TWO-WAY TALK: Smartly detect person/car/animal movements from other objects, reducing false alarms. Upon motion detection, you’ll receive Push/email instantly and can talk with people by the cam side via 2-way talk directly through Reolink App/Client.
- PoE TECH & IP67 WEATHERPROOF: Only one cable handles both data transmission and stable power supply. (Note: The PoE NVR/switch/injector and DC power adapter are not included.) An easy setup for all-level users. Reolink Duo 3 PoE endures all weather conditions and facilitates ceiling or wall mounting. Ideal for versatile settings.
- SMART USER EXPERIENCE & TIME LAPSE: Enhance your surveillance efficiency with multiple smart features: remote live viewing, custom motion zones, and smart playback (up to 16x speed). Plus, time-lapse condenses long-term events into minutes, facilitating easy observation of transformations.
- A current fixed-camera map, location list, or system inventory
- The applicable ALPR policy
- Contracts or procurement records
- Existing deployment or audit reports
Access rules and exemptions vary by jurisdiction. Monterey Park Police Department notes that the city’s public-records law does not require it to create a new record or answer questions with an explanation; disclosure is limited to records that are disclosable under the applicable law.
Weigh evidence without overreading it
- Specific site: A current agency map, camera list, or inventory with a clear scope is the strongest public confirmation of a listed location.
- Agency program: An official ALPR page, policy, budget or procurement record, or portal can establish that a program exists without proving a particular device’s present operation.
- Registry: A state registration page can provide another lead, but check what it verifies and whether submissions are independently reviewed.
- Unconfirmed lead: Crowdsourced maps and resident sightings may point to a place to check, but do not establish ownership, system type, or current operation on their own.
- No result: A lack of public listings is not proof that no cameras operate nearby. Information may be published under different terminology, or a map may omit mobile or partner systems.
Henrico County Police Division’s policy says fixed-camera locations are selected based on points of entry and exit, natural traffic choke points, or locations tied to criminal activity or investigations supported by offense, call, or traffic data. That describes the county’s stated site-selection factors, not a general rule for other agencies.

Do not confuse ALPRs with traffic-enforcement cameras
ALPR systems capture vehicle and license-plate images or data for law-enforcement investigations. Automated red-light and speed-enforcement cameras are designed for civil traffic enforcement. Alexandria Police Department lists these as separate categories. A roadside device’s appearance alone is not enough to identify its purpose; check the agency’s description or policy.
