If a website has published your personal data without permission, preserve evidence first, ask the site operator to remove the source page, and report it to the host or registrar if necessary. Separately ask search engines to delist the result: that can make the page harder to find, but does not delete it from the website. The right legal or regulator route depends on your country and what was published, and none of these requests guarantees removal.
1. Preserve evidence before contacting anyone
Capture the full page URL, a screenshot showing the content and address, and the date and time. Record what information is exposed, why its publication is unauthorized or harmful, and whether there is an immediate safety risk. Avoid circulating the page or repeating sensitive details more than necessary. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends evidence such as screenshots showing content, its full location, and capture time in takedown reports (NCSC takedown guidance). The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also advises preserving relevant records and not destroying evidence during an investigation (FTC data-breach response guide).
2. Ask the site operator to remove the source page
Look for the website’s privacy, abuse, removal, or contact channel. If the site republishes material from a named publisher, contact the publisher as well as the site operator. Include the page URL, identify the type of personal data involved without unnecessarily repeating the actual values, explain why the publication is unauthorized or creates a risk, and request removal and written confirmation. Keep a copy of your message and any response.
Where your country provides a formal data-protection rights process, use the applicable process and state the specific right you are invoking. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) describes a right to request removal of links in qualifying circumstances, but its guidance says search engines weigh privacy impacts against public interest and is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act (ICO guidance on internet search results). A site or search provider may refuse a request; a request by itself does not establish that the publisher is legally required to comply.

3. Report the site to its host or domain registrar if needed
If the operator does not respond, or you cannot identify or reach them, report the page through the domain registrar’s abuse channel and the hosting or IP provider’s abuse contact. Provide the URL, evidence, and a concise explanation of the harm. The NCSC describes a process for identifying the registrar, locating its abuse channel, identifying the website’s IP address and IP owner, and sending evidence to the relevant contact. Its guidance addresses malicious content targeting brands, so this is a possible infrastructure reporting route—not a guaranteed remedy for every publication of personal data. The NCSC notes that a response can take hours, days, or weeks (NCSC takedown guidance).
An abuse report asks a provider to review content under its policies or terms; it is not necessarily a court order or a legal finding. Providers decide what action to take under their rules and applicable law. If you use a specialist service to help with persistent or multi-site reports, check what it actually submits, how it validates requests, its geographic coverage and reporting process, and how it explains outcomes. No service can promise a successful removal merely by filing reports.

4. Request search-result removal separately
Send a request to Google Search or the relevant search engine for any qualifying personal content. Google provides a process through which the affected person or a representative can request removal of certain personal content; eligibility depends on the content and circumstances (Google: remove personal information from Google Search). A search engine’s decision concerns its results, not the original site.
The ICO explains that search providers assess requests and may balance privacy against public interest. Even when a provider removes a link, the source webpage remains online unless its operator removes it. The ICO states: “Even if search providers remove a link, they cannot delete the information from the webpage it is published on, or take the webpage off the internet” (ICO guidance on internet search results). Pursue the source-page request and search-result request as separate actions.

Once the website owner has removed the information, Google says the page will eventually disappear from Search through its regular updating. If a result still shows an outdated version, Google also offers a refresh route for outdated content (Google: refresh outdated content).

Immediate threats or suspected criminal conduct
If publication is accompanied by threats, stalking, extortion, or a credible risk of physical harm, contact local law enforcement promptly and preserve the evidence. Do not assume that a single country’s definition of doxxing applies everywhere. The Dutch data-protection authority describes doxxing as a criminal offense under Dutch law and recommends reporting likely criminal doxxing to police; that is a Netherlands-specific example, not a universal legal rule (Dutch Data Protection Authority: doxxing).

Privacy regulator complaint
If a publisher or search engine does not address a data-protection concern, check whether the privacy regulator in your country accepts complaints and whether you must first contact the organization. In the UK, the ICO accepts complaints about data-protection concerns, including search-result issues. Its approach is jurisdiction-specific, and its guidance notes that public interest may be weighed against privacy impacts (ICO guidance on internet search results).
Nonconsensual intimate images in the United States
Use the specific platform reporting route for intimate imagery, including digital forgeries, rather than treating it as an ordinary personal-data request. According to the FTC, Section 3 of the US Take It Down Act took effect on May 19, 2026. For a covered platform receiving a valid request about covered nonconsensual intimate imagery, the Act requires removal of the reported content and known identical copies within 48 hours. The FTC says violations may result in civil penalties of $53,088 per violation; that figure concerns platform compliance and is not a payment or award to the person reporting the content. The rule is limited to covered platforms and the Act’s intimate-image category; it is not a general deadline for removing other personal information (FTC Take It Down Act compliance guide).
