Choose .biz when that .com is unavailable or impractical, your use is genuinely commercial, and the .biz name is easy for customers to remember and type.
What is the difference between .biz and .com?
Both are generic top-level domains (gTLDs), the suffixes at the end of internet addresses. ICANN describes .com as originally intended for commercial businesses worldwide, while .biz is restricted to business use. The original .biz agreement says registrations must be “used or intended to be used primarily for bona fide business or commercial purposes.” ICANN’s .biz agreement sets out that requirement.
The .biz registry’s IANA delegation record lists Registry Services, LLC as the sponsoring organisation. It records .biz’s registration date as June 26, 2001, and was last updated March 10, 2026. IANA’s .biz delegation record provides the registry details.
Is .biz less trustworthy than .com?
There is no universal trust penalty established for .biz, and the suffix alone does not prove whether a business is legitimate. However, .com is much more common: ICANN Contractual Compliance reported 151,931,301 .com registrations and 1,551,210 .biz registrations in 2026—about 98 .com registrations for every .biz registration. Those figures measure registrations, not customer trust, website quality, or sales. ICANN’s contractual compliance reports publish the counts.

That difference in familiarity can matter in practice. ICANN’s 2018 review reported that six months after .biz open registration, 91% of a sample of .biz names were also registered in .com, and summarised research indicating that .biz was disproportionately less popular than .com. This is evidence of .com’s stronger adoption, not proof that customers reject every .biz site. ICANN’s 2018 .biz review gives the historical context.
When should a business choose .com?
Prioritise .com when you serve a broad consumer audience, expect the brand to grow internationally, or depend on referrals and people typing your address from memory. Its much larger installed base and long-standing commercial familiarity make it the extension many people are more likely to expect. ICANN’s domain-name FAQ explains the original commercial purpose of .com.
Before settling on a name, check whether the exact .com is available and compare both the upfront price and renewal price. A domain with an attractive first-year offer may cost more to renew, so consider the recurring cost rather than just the initial checkout price.
When does .biz make sense?
.biz can be a practical, deliberate fallback if the matching .com is taken, priced beyond your budget, or held by an unrelated party. It is most suitable when the business name is short, easy to pronounce and spell, and legally clear—and when using the extension will not force you to explain it repeatedly.

Because customers may expect .com, make “dot biz” prominent whenever you share the address verbally or in writing. Before committing, check for relevant trademarks and confusingly similar domain names. These are sensible due-diligence steps; the cited ICANN sources do not quantify a universal trust or conversion effect for .biz.

- Check the exact .com name. If it is available at a purchase and renewal price you can accept, it is generally the stronger default for a typical business.
- Assess the audience. A broad consumer or international audience, or one that often hears your URL rather than seeing it, strengthens the case for .com.
- Evaluate the .biz alternative. Consider it if .com is unavailable or impractical and the .biz address is clear, memorable, appropriate for commercial use, and legally distinct.
- Check for confusion and cost. Review similar names and trademarks, then weigh the likely risk of customers typing the corresponding .com against the domain’s total cost.
- Communicate the suffix clearly. If you choose .biz, include “dot biz” in spoken referrals and make the full address unmistakable in marketing.
Registrars sell domain names; ICANN explains the registrar role in its domain-name FAQ. For .biz registry information, see IANA’s delegation record.
