Yes—Norton says its protection is designed to detect Trojans, including remote access Trojans. It uses several detection approaches, but no antivirus can be assumed to catch every threat. Norton acknowledges that detection timing differs among vendors and says some Trojan infections may require manual removal.
How Norton says it detects Trojans
Norton’s antivirus product overview lists Trojans among the malware its protection is designed to address. Its described methods include scanning files, checking reputation information, analyzing behavior, and using machine learning. Emulation can run a file in a lightweight virtual machine to reveal what it does.
Norton describes machine learning as a way to assess files even when they are new to the product. As Norton puts it on its official product page: “Norton AntiVirus technology uses machine learning to determine if a file is good or bad, and can do so even if it’s the first time seeing that file.” That is the vendor’s description of its technology, not an independent test result.
These features and their availability vary across Norton products and platforms. Norton also describes remote access Trojans (RATs), which can give an attacker a back door into a compromised computer.

Can Norton miss a Trojan?
Yes. Norton’s Virus FAQ says antivirus vendors may process threats on different schedules: sometimes another product detects a threat first, and sometimes Norton does. That is Norton’s explanation of detection timing, not a head-to-head test or a detection-rate guarantee.
So, if Norton does not alert you about a suspicious file, that alone does not prove the file is safe. Likewise, an alert is a reason to follow the product’s instructions, not to assume that every platform or plan handles the detection identically.

Will Norton remove a Trojan?
Norton may detect and handle a Trojan, but automatic repair is not guaranteed. Norton says Trojans and worms can be difficult to repair automatically because they do not contain clean code that can simply be repaired; some may need manual removal. This is general support guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular infection.
A banking Trojan, for example, may target banking websites or software to steal credentials or make unauthorized payments, according to Norton’s support guidance on repeated detections. If Norton keeps reporting the same threat, check the detection details and use the handling steps for your specific product and device. Norton notes that Protection Report details and available features depend on the plan, where the report is viewed, and which devices have protection installed.

What to do if you suspect a Trojan
- Keep protection enabled and updated. On Mac, Norton says Real-Time Protection uses threat signatures delivered through virus-definition and other security updates.
- Review the alert in Norton. Check the detection details and follow the instructions for the product and device you use; reports and handling steps can vary.
- Do not treat silence as proof of safety. If a file remains suspicious without an alert, avoid opening or running it while you assess it.
- Escalate persistent detections or symptoms. Norton says some Trojans may need manual removal, so do not assume that repeating a scan will resolve every infection.
What Norton Real-Time Protection does on Mac
Norton’s Mac-specific Real-Time Protection documentation says Auto-Protect checks files when a person or application tries to run, open, or modify them. Norton says that when it detects a malicious file, it quarantines the file by default and automatically deletes it. The company advises keeping real-time protection on.
Those details apply to the documented Mac product; they should not be taken as a description of how every Norton plan or device handles threats.

What Norton’s claims do—and don’t—establish
Norton’s materials establish that its protection is intended to detect Trojans and describe the methods it uses. They do not establish a current independent Trojan detection percentage or prove that Norton will detect a particular threat before other antivirus products. If you are comparing products, look for current independent testing of detection and removal, false positives, and coverage for your operating system and plan rather than relying on a vendor’s feature description alone.
