You do not need to change a universal set of settings after installing Windows 11 26H2. First check for updates and confirm your backup is working; then review privacy, accessibility and personalization settings according to your needs. The update is rolling out to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices, and some reported issues depend on the apps and hardware you use.

What to know before changing settings

Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2 on September 29, 2026. Its phased rollout is for eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. On eligible systems, 26H2 is an enablement package: Microsoft says the download is small and installation typically needs a quick restart, but the time can vary by PC. Compatibility safeguards may also affect when the upgrade is offered. Microsoft’s rollout and installation details explain how to check availability.

If you are still waiting and want to seek the update, open Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. This does not override eligibility or compatibility safeguards.

What to check after upgrading

1. Install available Windows updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install applicable updates offered for your PC and restart if Windows asks you to.

Known-issue status can change as Microsoft releases updates. Consult the Windows 11 26H2 release-health page if a feature stops working, rather than relying on a static list of upgrade problems.

2. Confirm your backup still completes

If you use File History, check that its destination is available and that a recent backup completes. Microsoft documents File History backups to either an external drive or a network location. An external drive can travel with you but is unavailable when disconnected; a network location can fit an existing shared-storage workflow but depends on network access. Choose the destination that suits your setup—26H2 does not require buying new hardware. See Microsoft’s File History instructions for setup and use.

Microsoft’s update history says a File History problem affecting some systems after a September 2026 update was resolved in updates released on and after September 22, 2026. Checking that a recent backup actually finishes is more useful than assuming the feature is working.

Which settings are worth reviewing?

Privacy

Review the privacy settings that matter to how you use the PC and adjust them to your preferences. Microsoft’s 26H2 release materials do not prescribe a privacy switch that every user should change after upgrading; do not treat a personal preference as a universal security requirement.

Accessibility

Revisit accessibility options if you rely on features such as captions, magnification, voice access or keyboard accommodations. Confirm the settings you depend on are still configured as you expect; change them only if your needs or preferences call for it.

Personalization and taskbar behavior

Check personalization options and taskbar behavior if something looks or works differently from your preferred setup. Microsoft describes some newly enabled defaults for commercial devices, including app-specific taskbar actions, Windows settings backup and File Explorer improvements. Those commercial defaults do not necessarily describe a home PC, and existing administrator-configured policies for settings backup continue to be honored. See Microsoft’s 26H2 feature notes for context.

Check for audio problems if you use affected apps

Microsoft’s release-health page lists a confirmed issue for some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding after updates released September 22, 2026 and later. Affected apps may fail to launch or close unexpectedly, sometimes when using audio features. Microsoft notes that many modern apps use their own decoders and may not be affected. As of the page’s October 2, 2026 update, the listed resolution was a future Windows update; check the live page for the current status before troubleshooting.
