AWS plans to invest £8 billion in UK data-centre infrastructure between 2024 and 2028. The programme is intended to build, operate and maintain facilities supporting cloud and AI services; Amazon estimates it will contribute £14 billion to UK GDP through 2028 and support more than 14,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually at local businesses.
What AWS is investing £8 billion in
The commitment covers digital and AI infrastructure, specifically the building, operation and maintenance of data centres in the UK. AWS described the plan as a response to growing needs among its customers and partners and as support for the transformation of the UK’s digital economy. The announcement is about the physical infrastructure behind cloud services, not a retail data-centre product.
AWS says its UK Region launched in December 2016 and has three Availability Zones, alongside other network locations. The £8 billion announcement does not include a complete list of new construction sites or a facility-by-facility spending allocation.
Why the expansion matters for cloud and AI
Amazon says the investment is intended to meet rising demand for AWS cloud, artificial-intelligence and generative-AI services. It also aligns with the UK’s ambition to increase AI computing capacity. In practical terms, data centres provide the physical computing infrastructure that cloud services and AI workloads rely on; the announcement signals planned investment in that capacity, rather than quantifying how much additional compute will come online.

What AWS estimates for jobs and economic impact
AWS estimated that the investment would contribute £14 billion to the UK’s total GDP through 2028. It also estimated more than 14,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually at local businesses across its data-centre supply chain and the wider local economy. HM Treasury described the employment estimate as around 14,000 jobs per year, including work in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications and related local activity.
These are estimates published by AWS and repeated by the government, not independently audited measurements of results. The annual jobs figure covers work at local businesses and in the wider economy; it should not be read as a count of AWS employees alone or as a one-time total of new permanent posts.

Where the new data centres will be built
AWS and HM Treasury’s published announcements do not provide a complete list of sites for the £8 billion programme. They also do not break down the investment by location or facility. The UK Region’s three Availability Zones describe AWS’s existing regional cloud infrastructure, but they do not identify where this announcement’s new construction will take place.

Amazon announced a wider £40 billion UK investment plan for 2025–2027 on 24 June 2025. It covers fulfilment centres, delivery infrastructure, corporate facilities, transport, skills, and cloud and AI infrastructure. Amazon says the AWS data-centre commitment is the £8 billion previously announced for 2024–2028 and is included within the broader corporate plan. The two figures therefore describe overlapping commitments, not separate amounts to add together.
