wallust is an open-source Rust command-line tool that analyzes an image and generates a 16-color scheme. On Linux, run wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg to create a palette; wallust can apply its colors to terminals, cache them, or render them into application configuration using templates.

What is wallust?

wallust turns an image—such as a desktop wallpaper—into a reusable color scheme. Its central command is wallust run <image>. The generated colors can be sent as escape sequences to terminals that are already open, written to cache files, or inserted into other programs’ configuration through templates. See the wallust project and its Docs.rs package documentation.

How do I install wallust and create a 16-color palette?

The documented Cargo installation works from a shell with Rust’s Cargo package manager available:

cargo install wallust
wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg

Replace the example path with a local PNG or JPEG. An image with a clear range of colors is a useful starting point. The project also documents building from source: clone the repository, build with its Makefile, and run make install. From a checkout, it also describes cargo install --path . and a release build.

Where does wallust put the colors?

By default, wallust can send terminal color sequences to active Linux terminals, using terminal devices under /dev/pts/. It also supports cached output and templates. The cache location follows $XDG_CACHE_HOME, or falls back to $HOME/.cache; configuration follows $XDG_CONFIG_HOME, or $HOME/.config. The expected configuration file is ~/.config/wallust/wallust.toml.

After the first run, inspect the terminal appearance and the generated cache files. For a target application, check its own configuration and reload behavior: generating a file does not necessarily make that application reread it immediately.

Why do generated colors look too similar or too light?

wallust exposes several controls in its configuration that affect how it samples an image and turns selected colors into a scheme. Change one at a time and rerun the same image so you can see which setting helps.

  • Backend: Selects how pixels are sampled or reduced before colors are chosen. Documented alternatives include native methods, k-means, a SIMD fast_resize backend, and an ImageMagick convert path.
  • Color space: Affects how prominent colors are evaluated and distinguished. A LinuxLinks review describes wallust’s use of LCH or other color spaces to help avoid near-duplicate colors, rather than relying on HSV alone. This is a qualitative explanation, not a benchmark. Read the LinuxLinks review.
  • Palette style: Controls how selected colors are arranged, including dark and light variants.
  • Threshold: Changes the cutoff used during color selection.

The official documentation lists configurable backends, color spaces, palette styles, and threshold. It also explains that wallust offers alternatives to the ImageMagick route; there is no single fastest choice established for every image and machine. For configuration names and supported values, consult the package documentation.

How do I apply wallust colors to terminals and VS Code?

Terminals

The default terminal output targets sessions that are already open. New terminal sessions may not inherit those colors automatically. To apply colors whenever a new session starts, arrange for your shell startup configuration to source the generated sequence or run the appropriate integration. The LinuxLinks review also documents wallust theme list for inspecting built-in schemes and wallust theme random for choosing one at random.

Other applications with templates

Templates let wallust write colors in formats an application can consume, such as CSS, JSON, or an application-specific configuration file. wallust supports a subset of Jinja2 by default and can be configured to use pywal-style syntax. After wallust renders a template, the target program may need to reload or restart before the new colors appear.

VS Code example

The community Wallust Theme VS Code project documents a template-based setup. Its example configuration maps a template to a generated JSON file, for example:

vscode = { src = 'vscode.json', dst = '~/.cache/wallust/colors.json' }

Copy and configure the project’s templates, then run wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg. The extension watches ~/.cache/wallust/colors and colors.json, with a file watcher and a five-second polling fallback. It offers clean and bordered variants and automatic light/dark detection. When diagnosing a stale theme, use the extension’s update or clear-cache commands as appropriate, then check whether the generated output and active theme agree.

A reliable wallust workflow

  1. Install wallust with Cargo using cargo install wallust.
  2. Generate a palette from a local image with wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg.
  3. Check the colors in currently open terminals and inspect the cache output.
  4. If the palette is muddy, duplicated, or poorly suited to a light or dark setup, adjust the backend, color space, palette style, or threshold in wallust.toml, then run the same image again.
  5. For applications beyond terminals, configure templates to write the formats and paths those programs expect.
  6. Set up shell startup integration if new terminal sessions should receive the palette automatically; configure each application’s own reload or restart behavior as needed.
