In a 2019 MIT Lincoln Laboratory demonstration, a swept infrared beam generated a message in water vapor near a listener, who heard it with ordinary ears—no headphones or receiver required. The experiment delivered roughly normal-conversation volume at about eight feet, but it was a research prototype, not a consumer device.
How can someone hear a message sent by laser?
The system, called Targeted Acoustic Laser Communication (TALC), uses the photoacoustic effect. Water vapor in the air absorbs infrared light; the absorbed energy produces sound. MIT Lincoln Laboratory chose a 1,907-nanometer wavelength, generated with a thulium laser, because water vapor absorbs it strongly. The sound is created in the air near the listener, so the listener does not need a device to convert a signal into audio. MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s 2019 report and its TALC technology page describe the approach.
How does the beam target one listener?
TALC’s directional method sweeps the beam across an arc using a rotating mirror or an acousto-optic modulator. The spot travels faster the farther it is from the transmitter. By setting the mirror speed so the spot moves at the speed of sound at the intended range, the system makes sound waves add coherently mainly in that direction and at that distance. The result is localized audio rather than a message that is equally audible throughout the room. MIT’s report explains the demonstration.
What did MIT demonstrate?

MIT said the demonstration was silent and invisible to other people in the room. Its report also said an interceptor would need to place an ear or receiver within about one inch of the intended listener’s ear to have a chance of hearing the message. That is a description of the reported setup, not a guarantee that every configuration would have the same privacy characteristics. MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s report gives these details.

Why did MIT use two encoding approaches?
MIT described two ways to encode audio. They differ in whether sound is confined to a target location:

The targeted sweeping method is the one associated with directing sound toward a particular listener. MIT’s 2019 account describes the distinction.

Is the laser safe around people?
MIT said the wavelength and intensity used in its test would not cause injury if the beam grazed eyes or skin. Charles Wynn, a technical staff member in MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s Advanced Capabilities and Technologies Group, called it “the first time such a technique can be used safely around humans.” Those statements apply to the tested parameters; they do not establish that arbitrary lasers, wavelengths, or power levels are safe around people. MIT’s report contains the safety statement.
Can you buy MIT’s laser-audio device?
MIT’s materials describe a research demonstration and a technology-transfer opportunity, not a named consumer product. The first transmitter was assembled from commercially obtainable parts. MIT said that miniaturization might enable smartphone-sized short-range systems, while larger systems could support longer distances; these are development possibilities, not available product specifications. The TALC page lists the technology for partnership or licensing and identifies patent applications US2021/0217402A1 and WO2020/180392A2. How does this differ from newer “audible enclave” research?
A separate Penn State report in 2025 described a non-laser approach: intersecting nonlinear ultrasonic beams create an “audible enclave” at their intersection. Penn State reported a test at about one meter and about 60 decibels. It is a distinct technique and should not be confused with MIT’s laser-and-water-vapor demonstration.
