Sometimes—but not for every professional workflow. A Galaxy Tab S12 can stand in for a laptop when your work fits supported Android apps, document editing, notes, video calls, and DeX multitasking. If you depend on specialized desktop software or features, keep a laptop unless you have confirmed the tablet handles those tasks. Samsung itself cautions that some specialized software may still require a laptop.
Which Galaxy Tab S12 models are available?
Samsung announced two models: the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S12+. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent performance or battery-life test results. Samsung Global Newsroom published them on September 30, 2026.

Both models list Android 17 with One UI 9, a MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, and microSD expansion up to 2 TB. These specifications do not establish real-world speed or runtime. Samsung Global Newsroom’s announcement provides the published details.
What makes the S12 laptop-like?
DeX offers a windowed workspace
Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like workspace for opening, resizing, and arranging apps. That can help when you need to work across several supported apps. It does not make Android apps equivalent to desktop software or guarantee that a particular professional workflow will work. The tablet can also act as a wireless second screen for a PC, which is useful when extending an existing computer setup rather than replacing it.

A keyboard and trackpad change the working experience
A physical keyboard and trackpad may make sustained typing and pointer-based tasks more comfortable than touchscreen-only work. Samsung describes the S12 Ultra with its Pro Keyboard and trackpad as a laptop-like productivity configuration. The S Pen is included with both models, but keyboard accessories are sold separately. Account for the keyboard, cover, hub, or other peripherals you actually need when comparing the total setup.
Samsung’s US product page also names apps such as Photoshop, Notability, Goodnotes, LumaFusion, Clip Studio Paint, and Notion. An app’s presence or optimization for the tablet does not establish that it has the same features as its desktop counterpart. Where the tablet may not replace your laptop
The central question is not whether the S12 can run familiar apps, but whether it can complete your actual work without missing a required capability. Samsung’s FAQ says a laptop may still be required for specialized software. That may matter if your job depends on desktop-only applications, plug-ins, particular file formats, advanced browser behavior, or peripherals that do not work with the Android app or tablet setup you intend to use.
DeX’s window arrangement is a productivity feature, not evidence of equivalence with a desktop operating system. Likewise, a processor name and battery capacity do not prove how quickly a specific project will render or how long the tablet will last in your workday. Samsung’s claims describe intended capabilities; no independent hands-on or work-performance measurements are established here.

How to decide before switching
- List your essential work tasks. Include the apps, files, browser functions, plug-ins, peripherals, external-display needs, and collaboration tools you use—not just the app names.
- Check each task on the Android version. Verify the required app version and confirm that the features you need are available, including file import and export behavior.
- Try the workflow with DeX and your intended input devices. Check whether its app windows, keyboard, trackpad, S Pen, and any required hub or external display are sufficient for your everyday tasks.
- Compare models and complete setup costs. Choose the 14.6-inch Ultra if its larger work area matters; consider the 12.6-inch S12+ if its lighter Wi-Fi weight is more useful. Add separately sold accessories you need to the device cost.
- Keep a laptop if a required task fails. A tablet can still be useful as a companion or second screen, but a gap in one essential workflow can prevent it from serving as your only work computer.
