If your Windows 11 touchpad has stopped responding, first check whether it is turned on in Settings. If it is enabled, update its driver through Windows Update; if that does not help, update or reinstall it in Device Manager. If those steps fail, contact your laptop’s manufacturer for model-specific support.
1. Check whether the touchpad is enabled
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. If the touchpad is off, turn it on. If pointer movement works but a gesture does not, check the available touchpad options and make sure the relevant gesture is configured. The settings and gestures available depend on the hardware; some require a precision touchpad. Microsoft’s touch-gesture guidance describes the settings and hardware limitations.
Some laptops also have a keyboard shortcut or maker-provided utility that disables the touchpad. There is no single shortcut that applies to every model, so check the instructions for your laptop’s make and model rather than trying a universal function-key combination.
2. Update the touchpad driver
A missing or outdated driver can cause touchpad problems. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first driver-update route. A driver update may help, but it is not guaranteed to resolve the problem.

If Windows Update does not offer a driver update, or the problem remains, you can check in Device Manager. Right-click Start, select Device Manager, and look for the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. The category and device name vary by laptop. If you find it, use its driver-update option. For Microsoft’s supported update and troubleshooting guidance, see Fix touchpad problems in Windows.
3. Reinstall the touchpad in Device Manager
If updating the driver does not help, or Windows reports that no updated driver is available, Microsoft says reinstalling the touchpad through Device Manager might help. Reinstallation prompts Windows to download the latest drivers from Windows Update.

In Device Manager, locate the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, then follow Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling a device driver: Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting steps. The exact device listing can vary, so confirm that you have selected the touchpad before uninstalling it.
4. Contact the laptop manufacturer if it still does not work
If updating or reinstalling the driver does not restore the touchpad, contact the manufacturer of your Windows device. The manufacturer can advise which driver, built-in diagnostic, or touchpad control applies to your specific model. Microsoft also directs users to the device manufacturer when these driver steps do not resolve touchpad problems. Avoid buying a replacement part based only on the general symptom; the correct diagnosis and compatible part depend on the laptop model.
