Treat camera-equipped glasses like any other camera: check their app settings before use, tell people what you intend to capture, ask before recording them, and put the glasses away where people expect privacy. An indicator light can provide notice, but it may not signal every camera-based AI feature.
Set privacy controls before you wear the glasses
For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Meta says the Meta AI app lets wearers manage preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Before heading out, open the app and review those controls. Turn off voice or AI features you do not plan to use, if your device offers that option. Meta says captures remain on the glasses until they are transferred to a phone through the app. Meta’s responsible innovation guidance

When a capture transfers to your phone, review it before sharing. Decide deliberately whether to keep it private, delete it, or share it; having a file on your phone does not mean it should automatically be posted or sent to others.
Ask before capturing people, and respect the setting
Before taking a photo or video that includes other people, tell them what you want to capture and ask permission. Meta’s guidance says, “If you want to capture a photo or video, make sure that you ask for permission from those around you.” If someone objects or seems uncomfortable, stop recording and put the glasses away. A visible light is a notice cue, not a substitute for asking or considering how people feel.

Avoid using the glasses in bathrooms, changing areas, medical appointments, private conversations, or other places where people reasonably expect not to be captured. Meta advises avoiding sensitive locations and settings where people would not want to be recorded. Venue and workplace policies may also restrict cameras, even when the glasses are being used casually.
Understand what the capture light does—and does not—show
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ says the outward-facing capture LED signals photos and videos. Its instructions say pressing the capture button takes a photo and holding it records video; voice commands can also capture content when voice controls are enabled. This outward-facing light is distinct from the inward-facing notification LED described in the FAQ. Do not confuse an inward-facing status light with notice to people in front of you. Ray-Ban’s US FAQ
Do not assume the capture LED signals every use of the camera. Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ says some camera-based AI features on newer models—for example, asking about a landmark or plant—may use the camera without turning on the capture LED because the feature is not intended to create shareable content. The same FAQ says those AI-use photos and videos are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. It also says first-generation glasses may still activate the LED for some such features because of hardware limitations. These are manufacturer descriptions; behavior can depend on the exact model and current software. If an AI feature uses the camera around other people, explain what you are doing or avoid using it around anyone who has not agreed. Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ
Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ also states that the glasses do not use facial recognition technology. Treat that as the manufacturer’s statement, not as an independent finding. Check the FAQ for your region and model rather than assuming all camera-equipped glasses behave alike.
Never cover or tamper with the indicator
Do not cover, modify, or try to defeat the capture LED. Meta says, “The capture LED has no off switch,” and says second-generation glasses disable the camera when they detect a blocked light. In a July 2026 article, Meta said it was improving detection to address physical tampering or destruction. These are company statements about safeguards, not independent measurements of how reliably people notice the light in every environment. Meta’s July 2026 explanation
The Data Protection Commission of Ireland’s 2023 annual report says its engagement with Meta raised concerns about how people captured in photos and videos would receive notice. The regulator reported design changes intended to make operation less covert, including an outward-facing LED whose size had more than doubled, a blinking recording pattern, additional controls to prevent accidental capture, and protection against tampering or unauthorized use. The report does not establish that bystanders will always notice the indicator. Data Protection Commission (Ireland), Annual Report 2023
Check local rules and policies
Rules about video, audio, recording conversations, and personal data vary by location and circumstances. The sources cited here do not establish whether a particular recording is lawful or set one rule for every country or state. Check applicable local law and any venue, school, or workplace policy before recording—especially when capturing conversations or using the glasses in a private setting.
