What Samsung confirms about the Tab S12 Ultra S Pen
Samsung announced on September 30, 2026, that the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Tab S12+ “come bundled with the ergonomically designed S Pen for effortless note-taking and precise editing.” That confirms an S Pen is included, but the statement does not describe setup, charging, or gesture compatibility. Samsung Global Newsroom’s announcement is product information from Samsung, not an independent performance assessment.
Samsung Support India’s listing for the 5G Tab S12 Ultra, model SM-X946B, surfaces an Android 17 user manual modified October 1, 2026. The listing does not expose the manual’s S Pen instructions, so it does not establish a model-specific pairing location, charging method, attachment orientation, BLE/Air Actions support, or S Pen reset option. Open the manual for your exact model and check the tablet’s own S Pen settings before relying on those features.
How to pair and charge the S Pen
Samsung’s general tablet guide says supported S Pens pair by attaching them to the tablet’s designated spot. Its orientation examples cover older Tab S6, S7, S8, S9, and S10 models—not the Tab S12 Ultra. Do not infer which side or direction to use on the S12 Ultra from those older examples. Find the S12 Ultra’s designated location and any pairing or charging instructions in its manual. The same general guide describes charging supported tablet S Pens at a designated tablet location and checking battery percentage through Air command or settings when the pen is connected wirelessly. Because that guide’s listed generations stop at Tab S10, treat both charging and battery reporting as unconfirmed for the S12 Ultra until its manual or settings verify them. If a battery indicator or wireless connection is not available, that alone does not establish a fault.
Are S Pen Air Actions and gestures available?
Air Actions are wireless remote gestures for compatible S Pen, device, and app combinations; they are distinct from using the pen tip for on-screen writing or editing. Samsung’s general instructions describe holding the pen button while flicking up, down, left, or right, or making a clockwise or counterclockwise circle. Supported actions vary by app, and Samsung’s guide says to inspect them by app in Air actions settings. None of this confirms S12 Ultra compatibility.

On the tablet, check Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air actions, if that path and option are present. Use the settings shown on your device and the S12 manual to confirm availability; Samsung’s general guide lists exclusions for some models, but does not establish whether the S12 Ultra supports or lacks Air Actions. Try these checks in order, using the S12 Ultra manual to identify its intended attachment point. The wireless-specific steps apply only if your tablet and pen support the relevant wireless features.

- Check attachment and alignment. Reattach the pen to the S12 Ultra’s designated location and make sure it is seated correctly. Confirm the location and orientation in the model’s manual rather than borrowing directions from another Tab generation.
- Remove possible magnetic interference. Take off a third-party case, cover, or magnetic accessory and check whether recognition changes. Samsung notes that magnetic accessories can interfere with S Pen recognition.
- Check wireless conditions, if Air Actions are supported. Keep the pen near the tablet. Samsung gives a range of 30 feet with no obstruction for Air Actions on devices that support them; this is general troubleshooting guidance, not an S12 Ultra specification.
- Review wireless and power settings. Turn off Airplane mode and, if enabled, the “Limit apps and Home screen” power-saving option, then check the connection again. Samsung says these settings can disconnect wireless S Pen features on supported devices.
- Check relevant permissions if Air command is failing. Where they appear on your device, review Air command permissions such as Nearby devices and Physical activity.
- Use reset only if the S12 Ultra offers it. Samsung’s general reset path for supported models is Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > More options > Reset S Pen. The option is unavailable on models without BLE features, and resetting reverts customized features. Do not treat the presence or absence of this option as an S12-specific fact without checking the manual and settings.

When gestures or Air command do not respond
- First establish whether Air Actions are available on the S12 Ultra. A pen can still work for writing even if wireless gestures are unsupported or unavailable.
- If Air Actions are enabled, check the action assigned to the app you are using. Gestures depend on compatible apps and app-specific settings.
- Keep the pen near the tablet and check Airplane mode, the power-saving option, and relevant Air command permissions using the checks above.
- If the menu offers Air Actions but gestures still fail, consult Samsung’s general Air Actions troubleshooting steps; menu names and feature availability can vary by device and software version.
When to test another pen or contact Samsung
If practical, test the S Pen with another compatible device or test another compatible pen with the S12 Ultra. Compatibility is model-specific, so confirm it before treating a cross-device test as conclusive. If the pen or tablet appears physically damaged, or the issue persists after the applicable checks, contact Samsung service. If replacing a lost or damaged pen, verify that a listing explicitly names Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra compatibility; inclusion of an S Pen with the tablet does not by itself establish that a separately sold pen will fit or work.
