Then let prints dry before touching or stacking them. If smears persist, check for paper-path contact and run a nozzle check before cleaning the printhead. These steps help distinguish wet ink that transfers from ink that spreads into paper fibers or marks caused by rollers.
First identify what kind of mark you are seeing
- Ink transfers when touched or stacked: the print may not have dried yet, especially on coated or glossy stock or where dark areas use a lot of ink.
- Color appears to spread into the paper: check whether the stock is inkjet-compatible, in good condition, and correctly identified in the print settings.
- A streak or mark repeats in the same place: paper-path contact or contamination may be involved; inspect the path and follow the printer maker’s cleaning instructions.
Check the paper and its printable side
Use fresh, flat paper that meets your printer’s specifications. Damp, curled, wrinkled, old, or damaged sheets can contribute to poor output. Check the package and your printer manual to confirm the paper is intended for inkjet use and compatible with the printer and ink system. Epson recommends Epson media for its own products; that is a manufacturer-specific recommendation, not a universal requirement for every inkjet printer. Epson’s blurry or smeared printout guidance says, “Make sure your paper meets the specifications for your product.”
For coated or photo paper, verify which face is printable using the package or manual. The printable side may look different from the back, but appearance is not a universal guide across paper types. Handle glossy output carefully and avoid touching it immediately after printing.
Match the media setting to the loaded stock
In the print dialog or printer control panel, choose the paper or media type that best corresponds to the paper in the tray. A mismatch can produce unsuitable print behavior. For envelopes or thick paper, use the corresponding setting if your printer offers one. Menu names and available choices vary by model and operating system, so consult the manual if the right option is unclear. Epson’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking paper type and loading direction.

Some models provide controls for print density or ink drying time. If a heavily covered print stays wet, these may be worth checking in the driver or printer settings, but not every consumer inkjet offers them.
Let prints dry before handling or reloading
Give each sheet space to dry before touching, stacking, framing, or placing another sheet against it. There is no universal drying time: Epson notes that drying depends on print density and paper type, and does not specify one interval that applies to all prints. Its professional-printer guidance says, “Depending on the print density and type of paper you are using, the ink may take a while to dry.”

Prevent smears during manual two-sided printing
When printing on both sides manually, do not reload the sheet until the first side is completely dry. Heavy, dark coverage on the first side can leave marks when the printer handles the paper again. If one side has lighter coverage, print that side first. Epson’s support instructions advise letting ink dry completely before loading paper for manual two-sided printing.
Check the paper path if marks repeat
If a mark appears at the same edge or position on multiple sheets, inspect for paper-path or roller contamination. Use only the paper-guide or paper-path cleaning procedure in your printer’s instructions; do not disassemble the printer or use improvised solvents. Also check that paper is loaded in the direction specified and that the edge guides are aligned without pinching the sheets.

Run a nozzle check before cleaning the printhead
If paper, media settings, drying, and paper-path checks do not resolve the problem, run the printer’s nozzle check. Clean the printhead only if the check indicates missing or clogged nozzles, and follow the model’s instructions. Repeated cleaning uses ink, so it is not the first step for a print that is simply still wet. Epson UK also advises checking alignment in its inkjet print quality FAQ.

Ink can be relevant if the problem persists after confirming compatible paper and correct settings. Epson UK identifies third-party ink as a possible contributor to drying differences and advises checking the ink’s best-before date. Its FAQ says best results are achieved with the referenced inks within six months of insertion; that interval is Epson-specific and should not be generalized to other brands or ink systems. Check your printer’s own ink instructions, and if replacement is warranted, verify the exact cartridge or bottle specification for your model.
