Why clear phone cases turn yellow
Huawei says its transparent TPU/PC cases may yellow with age after exposure to sunlight, sweat, or smudges. Its guidance identifies everyday exposures, rather than a single cause that applies to every case. Huawei support guidance
Ultraviolet (UV) exposure can contribute to changes in the material. A European Patent Office publication describes transparent TPU cases as prone to irreversible yellowing after use and identifies UV irradiation as a cause. The patent also discusses a proposed pathway involving sweat or cosmetic residue; that technical explanation should not be taken as proof that all cases yellow through the same mechanism. Manufacturer explanations add context but are not independent comparisons: ESR discusses UV exposure, moisture, and dirt, while Mous cites UV, heat, and hand oils in explaining TPU yellowing. How to tell surface grime from material yellowing
A case that looks yellow may have greasy smudges on its surface, discoloration within the material, or both. Huawei recommends gently wiping greasy smudges with a clean cloth dipped in water. If the yellow tint remains after surface residue is removed, the material itself may have discolored; the patent describes TPU yellowing as irreversible, so washing should not be presented as a cure for that change. How to slow yellowing and clean a case
- Limit direct sunlight: Avoid leaving the case in direct sunlight when practical. Huawei specifically recommends avoiding direct sunlight during daily use. Huawei support guidance
- Keep it away from oily substances: Huawei names cooking oil and cosmetics as examples of colored oily substances to avoid. Huawei support guidance
- Wipe greasy smudges gently: Use a clean cloth dipped in water, as Huawei advises. Its guidance does not call for a specialized cleaner.
These steps can help limit avoidable exposure and remove some surface residue; they do not guarantee that a case will stay clear or restore plastic that has yellowed. The cited guidance does not establish a typical number of months before yellowing or a permanent prevention method.

What to look for in a replacement case
If yellowing affects normal use or appearance and remains after gentle cleaning, Huawei recommends getting a new case. Choose one made for your exact phone model, then compare its fit, the protection and construction you need, and the materials the maker discloses. Huawei support guidance
Treat “anti-yellowing” as a claim to evaluate, not a guarantee. The patent describes approaches such as UV absorbers, antioxidants, and protective layers intended to delay yellowing, but its technical embodiments do not establish how long a retail case will remain clear. EP 4545296 A1

ESR reports that a named design underwent a 48-hour UV light-aging test. That is a test reported by the manufacturer; it does not establish years-long performance or independently demonstrate how other cases compare. ESR’s test description
