Choose a home inkjet by matching it to how often you print and what you print—not by choosing a model with the longest feature list. A wireless color all-in-one is a useful starting point for many households with light, mixed needs. If you print regularly, compare refillable ink-tank models against cartridge printers using the exact model’s ink yield and supply prices. If photos are a priority, check photo-paper and borderless-printing support before you buy.

Start with what you print and how often

Make a rough monthly estimate, then separate ordinary documents from photos and other color jobs. The amount and type of printing affect whether a cartridge printer, tank printer, photo-focused model, or even a different printer class is the sensible place to start.

HP’s US buying guide suggests an all-in-one inkjet for households printing fewer than 50 pages per month, a business inkjet for 50–200 pages, and a laser or high-yield business printer for 200 or more. These are HP’s vendor recommendations, not an independent industry standard. Treat them as prompts for comparing your workload, not as universal cutoffs. A household that prints photos may care more about color and media support than page count alone.

  • Occasional, mixed household printing: Consider a wireless color all-in-one with the document and photo features you actually need.
  • Regular color printing: Compare cartridge and refillable tank systems, including the cost of the printer and its compatible ink.
  • Frequent photo printing: Prioritize supported photo-paper sizes and finishes, color configuration, and borderless printing if you want prints without a white margin.
  • Substantial, mostly-text printing: Compare an inkjet with a monochrome laser printer on speed and cost per page; an inkjet may not be the best class for that workload.

Choose between cartridge and tank ink

Cartridge printers can have a lower initial price, which can suit occasional printing. Refillable tank printers use bottles to replenish larger ink supplies and may reduce recurring ink costs for people who print regularly. Neither system is automatically cheaper for every buyer: the result depends on the exact printer, supply prices, published yields, and the amount and mix of work you do.

Printer type Worth considering when Main tradeoff Check before buying
Cartridge inkjet You want a lower initial device cost and expect to print occasionally. Replacement ink may add to ongoing costs; long periods without printing still require attention to printhead care. Compatible cartridge numbers, published yield, and the media and photo features on the exact model.
Refillable ink-tank inkjet You expect regular color printing and want to compare whether a larger ink supply lowers your recurring costs. The printer may cost more initially, and tanks and printheads still require maintenance. Compatible bottles, model-specific yield, maintenance guidance, and the price difference versus a cartridge model.
Photo-oriented inkjet You print family or hobby photos often enough that photo output and media support matter. You will need to weigh photo-focused ink and paper choices against your actual needs. Supported paper sizes, finishes and weights, borderless support, ink configuration, and desired color capability.

Canon provides page-yield information by product. Compare the published yield for the exact printer’s ink supply with its current local price, and consider whether your own mix of documents and photos resembles the conditions behind that yield. A yield figure alone is not a universal cost-per-page estimate. Epson notes that ink can remain in containers and that maintenance can affect ink use; Brother describes ink-consuming purges used to maintain printheads. Account for these factors rather than assuming every drop is available for printed pages.

HP’s US buying guide also makes claims about the point at which a tank printer may become more economical and possible per-page savings, but the assumptions behind those figures are not sufficiently specified for a general recommendation. Make your own comparison from current local prices, exact-model yields, and a realistic estimate of your printing.

Decide whether you need an all-in-one

An all-in-one combines printing with scanning and copying. It is useful if you expect to digitize paperwork or make copies at home; if you only print, a print-only model may be enough. Features vary by model, so check the specification sheet rather than assuming every all-in-one has the same tools.

  • Scanner and copier: Useful for forms, receipts, schoolwork, and occasional copies.
  • Automatic document feeder (ADF): Consider this if you regularly scan or copy multi-page documents; verify whether the exact model includes one.
  • Automatic duplex: Check whether the printer can print both sides of a page automatically if you do that often.
  • Wireless and mobile printing: Confirm the printer supports the connection methods and devices you plan to use.
  • Specialty media: Verify support for the paper, cardstock, or envelopes you intend to feed, including the supported size and weight.

For photos, check media and color features

Photo printing changes the priorities: confirm that the printer accepts the size, finish, and weight of paper you want, and check for borderless output if you prefer photos without margins. Paper compatibility and borderless support are model-specific.

Epson UK advises that six-color printers suit many photo enthusiasts, while ten-color systems are aimed at professionals seeking a wider color gamut. This is Epson’s guidance, not a rule that every home photo printer must follow. Match the ink configuration to how demanding your photo work is, and compare actual model specifications for the media and sizes you use.

Account for inactivity and printhead maintenance

Inkjet ownership includes printhead upkeep. Extended periods without printing can allow ink to dry at the printhead, and maintenance cycles may consume ink. Brother describes purges after inactivity; Epson UK recommends printing a few pages every couple of weeks. These are manufacturer recommendations, and the appropriate procedure depends on the model, so follow the instructions for the printer you choose rather than applying a generic cleaning routine.

Use a model-by-model checklist before buying

  1. Estimate your workload: Note approximate pages per month and how many are photos, color documents, or mostly text.
  2. Choose the printer type to compare: Start with a cartridge model for low-volume use or compare tank models for regular printing; consider whether high-volume, mostly-text work points toward a laser printer.
  3. Check workflow features: Confirm print-only versus scan/copy, ADF, automatic duplex, wireless or mobile printing, and supported specialty media.
  4. Compare ongoing ink costs: Find the exact compatible cartridge or bottle, its published yield, and its current price in your country. Do not assume supplies are interchangeable across models.
  5. Check photo requirements if relevant: Verify paper sizes, finishes and weights, color configuration, and borderless printing for the exact model.
  6. Review maintenance guidance and local support: Check how the manufacturer recommends handling periods of low use, and confirm model availability and consumables in your region.

Manufacturer guides can help identify features to compare, but they do not establish a universally best current model. HP and Brother’s cited guides are US-facing; Epson’s tank and photo guides are UK-facing, and product availability, features, ink supplies, and prices vary by country. A specific model recommendation requires current local specifications, prices, and comparable testing of quality, speed, and reliability.
