Design an electronic safe as two systems working together: a physical enclosure and boltwork that resist attack, and an electronic access-control system that operates the bolt reliably. A keypad, microcontroller, and actuator are only part of the design. You also need to plan for depleted batteries, jammed or misaligned boltwork, repeated incorrect codes, and an emergency way to regain access without making the safe easy to bypass.

Start with the threat and the mechanical safe

Decide what the safe must protect—such as documents, cash, electronics, or higher-value assets—and what kinds of access or attack it must resist. Then assess the enclosure and the lock installation together. Measure the door thickness, available mounting depth, bolt diameter and travel, and the force needed to move the existing boltwork.

The electronics cannot make a weak safe secure. Hinges, strike geometry, wiring routes, the door itself, and whether the whole container can be carried away all affect the result. Plan the lock around the actual boltwork rather than choosing a keypad and actuator in isolation.

Choose the access-control architecture

A practical design connects an input device to a low-power microcontroller (MCU), which checks credentials and controls a motor or solenoid through a suitable driver. It also needs protected nonvolatile storage for credentials, battery monitoring, status indicators, retry-delay logic, and a recovery method. A published Electronics For You reference design describes keypad, fingerprint, or SD-card input; code storage in EEPROM; motor or solenoid control; battery-voltage measurement; and sleep or hibernate modes. Its central power-design point is that a battery-operated system needs a low-power MCU.

Sargent & Greenleaf S&G Model 1004-102 Spinblocker Bolt Electronic Safe Lock
  • SPINBLOCKER SECURITY: We built in an added layer of security to Model 1004 with our unique SpinBlocker protection. In the event that power goes out or is cut, our Model 1004 electronic safe lock automatically relocks—without power—to make sure that your valuables stay secure. Features include: (1) Motor-driven, automatic secure mechanism, (2) Automatically locks when boltwork fully extended, and (3) Lock bolt withstands 225 lbs (1000 newtons) of bolt end pressure.
  • QUICK-MOUNT KEYPAD: Model 1004’s quick-mount keypad makes installing or retrofitting the lock onto your safe a simple process. Constructed with S&G’s Magic Module footprint, Model 1004 easily fits most home gun safes without added boltwork or mounting screw location changes.
  • MULTI-USER OPERATION: Assign two different user codes with keypad programming for greater flexibility for a home gun safe protection.
  • ALL-INCLUSIVE KIT: Bright CHROME Quick Mount One-Battery Keypad, Lock Body, Mounting Hardware, and Battery.

Choose the credential interface

A matrix keypad is a straightforward starting point. Fingerprint or card readers may suit a particular threat model, but add their own hardware, firmware, and power considerations. Whichever input you choose, position it to reduce casual observation of code entry, limit repeated attempts, and avoid storing credentials in plaintext when a protected representation is practical. The credential reader, reset control, and any exposed cable are all potential attack surfaces.

Protect credentials and administrative actions

Keep credential handling separate from the actuator-control logic where practical, and restrict who can add, change, or remove access credentials. Protect administrative changes with authentication and record them if the product needs an audit trail. Firmware updates should be authenticated so an attacker cannot simply install unauthorized code. These measures support the lock design; they do not replace a strong enclosure or secure installation.

Select and control the actuator

Motorized locks and solenoid bolts are established electronic-locking approaches. Choose between them based on the physical boltwork and the installation, not just convenience. Compare the candidate mechanisms against the requirements that matter to your design:

Use a transistor or MOSFET driver rated for the actuator’s electrical load. Inductive loads need flyback protection; provide current limiting as appropriate to the design. Where bolt movement can be obstructed or misaligned, add position or door sensing so firmware can establish whether the bolt is fully locked or retracted. A brief drive pulse alone cannot confirm that the mechanism completed its travel.

Design for battery life and power loss

Use replaceable batteries or a serviceable battery pack, a low-quiescent-current regulator, and sleep or hibernate modes when the safe is idle. Measure battery voltage and give a clear low-battery warning while there is still time to service the safe. Electronics For You’s reference design specifically describes battery monitoring, replaceable batteries, and low-power operation.

Also decide how an owner can recover access after the internal battery is depleted. Options described in the design guidance include an external emergency-power contact or a mechanical override. Either should be inaccessible or protected during normal use while remaining usable during a genuine recovery. The recovery method is part of the security boundary: if it is easy to reach or defeat, it can undermine the electronic lock.

  • Penalty time feature prevents opening until a valid code is found and locks after three wrong code entry attempts.

Choose the correct behavior when something fails

For a standalone safe, the usual design goal is fail-secure: loss of electrical power should not unlock the safe. That is not a universal rule for every electrically controlled lock. If a lock is installed on an escape route, life-safety requirements can call for release on fire-alarm activation, power loss, or an approved override. NSI guidance addresses those escape-route conditions; apply the requirements relevant to the actual installation and jurisdiction.

ASSA ABLOY likewise advises evaluating life safety, lock testing and ratings, compatibility with other components, lock strength, fire-rating needs, and whether the application calls for fail-safe or fail-secure behavior. Decide this before choosing the actuator and recovery method, not after the hardware is installed.

Add controls for tampering and misuse

  • Apply retry delays or lockouts after repeated invalid codes, and rate-limit biometric or card attempts where those credentials are used.
  • Protect wiring and cable entries from external access; consider the keypad, reset switch, and emergency override as attack surfaces.
  • Use door-position sensing when the design needs to know whether the door is open or closed, and bolt-position sensing where the controller needs to confirm bolt travel.
  • Log administrative credential changes if the product needs an audit trail, and authenticate firmware updates.

Validate normal operation and fault recovery

Test the complete safe and boltwork together, including the conditions that could leave a user locked out or the safe unsecured. Treat these as engineering test cases, not as performance claims about any particular product:

  • Repeated normal unlock and relock cycles, including confirmation of fully locked and fully retracted states.
  • Low-battery warning, battery depletion, and recovery after battery replacement.
  • Brownout or power loss during actuator movement.
  • Repeated wrong codes and the resulting retry delay or lockout behavior.
  • Obstructed bolt movement, door misalignment, and sensor failure.
  • Use of the emergency-power method or mechanical override, followed by return to normal operation.

Understand which standards apply

Do not treat a software standard as certification of the physical safe. ISO/TS 24574:2025 concerns digital safe software and explicitly excludes physical security, fire-extinguishing systems, power-supply security, and telecommunications from its scope.

For electric locking hardware, UL Solutions identifies UL 1034 as the standard for burglary-resistant electric locking mechanisms and UL 294 categories for access-control system units and special locking arrangements. DLA records identify FF-L-2740 for electromechanical combination locks protecting unattended national-security information and FF-L-2938 for related locks supplied to foreign governments. These are requirement references, not universal approvals: applicability depends on jurisdiction, product type, and intended security level. Check the requirements that govern the particular safe and installation rather than assuming that one standard covers the whole product.

Compare complete designs, not just lock components

When evaluating candidate designs, compare the full installation across attack resistance and exposed wiring; bolt and enclosure strength; credential security; actuator force and jam tolerance; battery serviceability; behavior on power loss; emergency recovery; tamper logging; fire or environmental rating; installation fit; and certification evidence. A lock that meets its actuator specification may still be a poor choice if its bolt geometry does not match the door or its recovery path defeats the security goal.
