When a branch draws too much current or shorts, its breaker or protected switch can disconnect that branch while other outputs remain energized. The exact behavior depends on the power-distribution unit (PDU), its protection design and how it is integrated into the system.
How branch protection keeps power flowing
A rugged power supply or PDU commonly combines upstream input protection with protection on individual output branches. The upstream device addresses faults affecting the overall input; a breaker or protected switch on each branch can isolate a fault at its source. If one load shorts, selective branch protection can prevent that fault from taking down the other loads.
Milpower describes its M9526 as a solid-state circuit breaker and as a building block for multi-channel PDUs. Its protected outputs illustrate how a breaker can be part of the distribution system rather than a single device protecting every load together. The manufacturer lists a 1–50 VDC operating range and a 30 A rating for the M9526; those figures apply to that product, not to rugged breakers generally.
Containing a fault can also make troubleshooting more targeted: technicians can identify and investigate the affected branch rather than cycling power to the entire system. This outcome depends on the system’s design and protection coordination; it is not a guarantee that every fault will leave all other outputs operating.

Different ways rugged systems implement breakers
Programmable solid-state protection
The M9526 is a programmable solid-state module. Its manufacturer describes programmable current limits, on/off control, channel sequencing, built-in test and voltage/current telemetry, with I2C listed for communications. These features can support remote monitoring and controlled power-up in an integrated platform. The required trip settings and the behavior after a trip must be confirmed for the intended configuration.
Individual output breakers with upstream protection
Rugged Systems documents a unit with a three-pole input breaker and individual breaker control on 15 outputs. This is a distinct implementation from a solid-state breaker module: it combines input protection with output-level control. The listed output count does not, by itself, establish each channel’s current rating or trip behavior.

Breaker distribution panels
IntelliPower lists a 100 A breaker distribution panel. A panel-level rating is not interchangeable with a per-output rating: check the product documentation for branch limits, total loading and the protection provided to each circuit.

Protection may include more than overcurrent interruption
A breaker or protected switch addresses overcurrent, but other fault conditions can require separate safeguards. Amphenol’s M7117 combines overload and short-circuit protection with input undervoltage and overvoltage lockout, output overvoltage protection, and over-temperature shutdown. These are product-specific capabilities, not features to assume in every rugged supply.
Likewise, a product’s military or environmental design claims apply to that product and its specified configuration. Manufacturer pages cite standards including MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, DO-160 and EN2282 across particular products. Verify the exact model, applicable standard revision and qualification scope; citing a standard does not establish that every breaker or every system component meets it.

How to choose protection for a rugged power system
- Match input and output electrical ranges. Confirm nominal voltage, expected transients and whether the application uses a DC bus such as 28 VDC or an AC input such as 115/200 VAC three-phase. Do not treat the M9526’s 1–50 VDC range as a general specification for other products.
- Check branch and total capacity separately. Compare the required current or power per load with each branch limit, then check the PDU’s total rating and channel count. Allow for the loads’ operating and startup conditions using the manufacturer’s integration guidance.
- Understand trip and reset behavior. Determine whether the implementation is programmable solid-state, mechanical, thermal-magnetic, electronic, latching or auto-recovering. Confirm trip curves, interrupt rating, reset method and whether a remote command can affect the branch.
- Verify coordination and fault interruption. The upstream device and branch protection must be suitable for the system’s prospective fault current and wiring. Exact trip curves and coordination rules are product- and system-specific; use the applicable datasheet and safety analysis rather than assuming a universal rule.
- Check controls, telemetry and integration. Confirm required interfaces and functions, such as CAN, RS-485, Ethernet, I2C, voltage/current telemetry, built-in test or remote inhibit. Also verify form factor, connector, mounting, service access and available derating data.
- Confirm environmental and compliance scope. Match operating temperature, shock, vibration and electromagnetic-interference requirements to the exact model and configuration. Check the standard revision and evidence of compliance relevant to the complete installation.
- Confirm the actual orderable configuration. Specialized products may be configurable or customized, and a catalog example does not guarantee current availability. Obtain the current manufacturer or distributor documentation for the specific part number and configuration.
Buying a replacement breaker is not the same as specifying a PDU
“DC circuit breaker” is a useful search phrase for an accessory or replacement category, but it does not make a consumer breaker equivalent to a qualified rugged PDU. Specify voltage (for example, 12, 24 or 28 VDC), continuous current, interrupt rating, pole count, mounting style, and manual-reset or electronic behavior. Confirm that the component is suitable for the fault conditions and environment of the actual system before substituting it.
