If VLC won’t play a video on your Mac, first check whether the problem affects one file or every file. A single-file failure points you toward the file or its format; problems with multiple videos make VLC’s compatibility, version, or settings more likely causes. Work through the checks below in order, and follow the steps for the symptom you actually see.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, compare the affected video with a file you know plays. Note whether VLC refuses to open the video, shows a black screen, quits, or plays unevenly. Those symptoms do not all have the same likely cause.
- One video fails: Check that file and its format first.
- Several videos fail in VLC: Check VLC’s macOS compatibility, updates, and preferences.
- The video opens but is choppy: Treat it as a playback-performance issue, not an inability to open the file.
- VLC quits as it launches or opens a video: Follow the reset steps for an app that quits.
These are troubleshooting clues, not proof of a cause. VideoLAN’s FAQ puts the central compatibility check plainly: “Are you sure VLC supports the file?”
Does the problem affect one file or every video?
Check the file and its format
A video may fail because it is damaged or because its format is not supported by the app or Mac. In Finder, select the file and press Command-I to open its Info window. Check the file’s Kind or filename extension; Apple recommends identifying the format when a media file will not open.

Then try a video you know works in VLC. If only the affected file fails, try opening it in another app that supports its format. If it fails there too, the problem may be the file or its format, but that alone does not prove the file is damaged.
Try another app that supports the format
QuickTime Player supports many media formats, but not every format works in every app. A successful playback in another compatible app suggests that VLC may be the issue; failure in both apps leaves the file’s condition or format as possibilities. This is a diagnostic comparison—you do not need to buy another player to try it. See Apple’s guidance on media files that do not open or play.

Is VLC compatible with your Mac, and is it up to date?
Update macOS and VLC before investigating deeper settings. Apple recommends checking for macOS updates and updates to apps downloaded from the internet or App Store. Get VLC from VideoLAN’s official Mac download page, and check that the release supports your installed macOS and Mac.
On October 3, 2026, VideoLAN’s page listed VLC 3.0.24 as a universal macOS package for supported 64-bit Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The version listing can change, and the newest release is not necessarily suitable for every older system; match the download to your Mac and operating system. VideoLAN notes that older systems may need an older VLC release.

Could VLC’s preferences be preventing playback?
If multiple videos fail, or VLC began misbehaving after settings were changed, reset VLC’s preferences. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation says incorrect settings or a broken plugin cache can cause problems. Resetting removes customized settings, so make a note of any preferences you want to restore.
- Open VLC and choose Tools > Preferences. Verify the menu labels in your installed version if they differ.
- Choose Reset Preferences, then confirm the reset if prompted.
- Reopen the video and check whether playback works.

If VLC quits before you can reset preferences
VideoLAN’s macOS FAQ describes removing VLC’s preferences for a specific problem: the app bounces in the Dock and then quits. That page documents deleting the VLC folder and org.videolan.vlc.plist from ~/Library/Preferences. This older VLC 3.0 guidance may not match every current macOS or VLC release, so use it only if the described symptom fits and your installed release is compatible. Removing preferences discards customized settings. Consult the VideoLAN macOS FAQ before deleting files.
What if VLC shows a black screen?
A black screen does not, by itself, establish that the video is damaged or identify a particular VLC setting as the cause. Start with the file-and-format checks above, then compare playback in another compatible app. If other files also show a black screen in VLC, update VLC and macOS and consider resetting preferences. The official guidance cited here does not establish a single current, macOS-specific hardware-decoding change as a definitive fix for black video, so avoid changing unrelated settings on that assumption.

What if the video plays, but playback is choppy?
Choppy playback is different from a video that will not open. VideoLAN says framedropping may help when the CPU is overloaded, but it can make playback choppier in some conditions. Treat it as a reversible experiment for uneven playback, not a general fix for failed or black-screen video.
If you try framedropping, note the current setting first and restore it if playback gets worse. VideoLAN’s FAQ explains the CPU-overload caveat.
