Apple iPhone 14 or later (all models) supports Emergency SOS via satellite; Google Pixel devices from Pixel 9 onward support Satellite SOS, except Pixel 9a; and select Samsung Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A phones support satellite features through participating carriers. These features are not interchangeable: emergency SOS, ordinary texts to friends and family, and carrier-provided satellite service have different device, country, carrier, software, and plan requirements.

Before relying on satellite connectivity, check the exact phone variant and service in your destination. A compatible device does not guarantee coverage or a connection.

Which phones support satellite messaging and emergency connectivity?

Phone or service Supported devices What the satellite feature does Key qualification
Apple Emergency SOS via satellite iPhone 14 or later, all models Contact emergency services by satellite when a local emergency call cannot connect. Requires a supported location, a clear view of the sky and horizon, and applicable software. Apple says its satellite features are included for two years after activation on iPhone 14 or later. Apple Support
Apple Messages via satellite iPhone 14 or later, all models Send messages to friends and family in supported locations. Available in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan with an active SIM and supported iOS. It is not an emergency service. Apple Support
Carrier-provided satellite service on iPhone iPhone 13 or later Carrier-dependent satellite features, which may include limited app data. Requires a supported carrier and current iOS; some providers require an eligible plan, and fees or data rates may apply. This is separate from Apple’s built-in satellite features. Apple Support
Google Satellite SOS Pixel devices since Pixel 9, except Pixel 9a Connect to emergency help through the Satellite SOS flow. Location availability, required software and APIs, and satellite-network registration apply. Google Messages must be the default messaging app. Google Pixel Help
Samsung Galaxy satellite services Select Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A phones Depending on the carrier and market, features can include emergency assistance, texting, warnings, or data. There is no single worldwide model list: rollout depends on device, operator, market, regulation, and software. Samsung Global Newsroom

In this guide, “satellite messaging” means a specific service—not simply a phone that displays “SOS” or has an emergency feature. Standard cellular “SOS only” indicates an emergency cellular connection may be available; it is not proof that satellite messaging works.

Where the services are listed as available

Apple Emergency SOS via satellite

Apple’s current support list names Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. Availability is subject to local approvals, and Apple specifies country-dependent minimum iOS versions. Visitors can use the feature in supported places, with exceptions based on where the iPhone was purchased; check Apple’s country and model guidance before travel.

Samsung Galaxy and carrier rollouts

Samsung describes a phased rollout across select Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A devices, varying by regional network availability and regulatory approval. Its February 27, 2026 announcement gives examples, not a universal compatibility list:

  • United States: T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink has supported T911, text, and data since 2025 on select Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A devices released after the Galaxy S21 series. Verizon offers eSOS and text on all Galaxy flagship models following the Galaxy S25 series. Samsung says it is also working with AT&T.
  • Japan: KDDI has provided satellite text and data, as well as Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System functions, on Galaxy S22 and later flagship and Galaxy A devices since 2025. Samsung said select devices were expected to gain features through SoftBank and docomo starting in 2026.
  • Europe: Samsung names select devices through Virgin Media O2, joint trials with MasOrange in Spain, and work with Vodafone.

These carrier examples do not establish that every model in a series, or every later Galaxy phone, supports every feature. Confirm the exact phone and service with the operator and consult Samsung’s rollout announcement.

What is the difference between satellite SOS, ordinary texting, and carrier service?

Emergency SOS

Emergency SOS uses a dedicated emergency workflow to contact public-safety services when ordinary coverage is unavailable. Apple directs users to try the local emergency number first; if the call cannot connect, the iPhone may offer emergency texting by satellite. Google’s Satellite SOS likewise starts from an emergency call attempt and then guides the user through a satellite connection and questionnaire. Neither feature guarantees a connection, response time, or rescue.

Ordinary person-to-person messages

Apple Messages via satellite is for communicating with friends and family, not for requesting emergency help. Apple says to use Emergency SOS via satellite in an emergency. Satellite messages can be slower than cellular messages and have feature limits described below.

  • Group messaging via the Garmin Messenger smartphone app lets you share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously — and have group text chats with friends and family
  • Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)

Carrier-provided satellite connectivity

A participating carrier may offer satellite texting, emergency messaging, or limited data independently of a phone maker’s built-in SOS service. The supported handset list, feature set, plan eligibility, fees, and geographic reach are carrier-specific. For example, Apple says carrier-provided iPhone satellite features require iPhone 13 or later and a supported carrier; some carriers require a qualifying plan. Check Apple’s carrier-feature guidance and the carrier’s own terms.

How satellite SOS works when you need help

On iPhone

  1. Try calling the local emergency number. If the call cannot connect and satellite service is available, follow the iPhone’s on-screen Emergency SOS via satellite prompts.
  2. Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Follow the phone’s connection guidance and answer the emergency questions as prompted.
  3. Prepare Medical ID and emergency contacts before an emergency, and review Apple’s setup and location instructions. Some local emergency numbers require a minimum iOS version.

On Pixel

  1. Start an emergency call. If the call cannot connect and Satellite SOS is available, select the satellite option and complete the questionnaire.
  2. Go outside and use the on-screen prompts to point the phone toward the satellite. If something blocks the connection, move to a clearer location; keep following instructions while waiting for a reply.
  3. Update required software and APIs, register with the satellite network, and make Google Messages the default messaging app. To try the demonstration, go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS. Google notes that response times vary. See Google’s Satellite SOS instructions.

Can you text from a phone without cell service?

Sometimes, but “no cell service” alone does not establish that texting by satellite is supported. You need a compatible phone, a supported satellite service in that location, required setup and software, and a sufficiently clear path to the sky. Trees, buildings, terrain, and other obstructions can slow or prevent a connection.

For Apple Messages via satellite, Apple says a message may take about 30 seconds to send under ideal clear-sky conditions, and more than a minute under light or medium foliage. Heavy foliage or other obstructions may prevent a connection. Photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, and group messages are not supported in satellite messaging. SMS availability depends on the provider, and fees may apply. These timings and limitations are Apple’s guidance for its Messages service, not a cross-brand performance comparison. See Apple’s Messages via satellite page.

What to check before buying a phone or travelling

  • Exact feature: Confirm whether you need emergency SOS, ordinary person-to-person messages, location sharing, roadside assistance, carrier emergency messaging, or satellite data. A phone’s support for one does not establish support for another.
  • Exact model and purchase region: Check the specific device variant, especially for Galaxy carrier rollouts and Apple purchase-location restrictions.
  • Destination and approvals: Compare the manufacturer’s current country list with your destination; carrier coverage and regulatory approval can further limit availability.
  • Carrier and plan: Verify operator support, eligible plan requirements, fees, and any data rates. Do not assume the phone maker’s satellite allowance covers a carrier service.
  • Software and activation: Confirm the required OS, app configuration, APIs, and satellite-network registration before leaving coverage.
  • Connection conditions: Expect to get outside with a clear view of the sky and follow the phone’s orientation prompts. Satellite access can be delayed or blocked by obstructions.
  • Included service period: Apple says its satellite features are included for two years after activation on iPhone 14 or later; carrier services have separate provider-specific terms.

Official manufacturer and carrier materials establish requirements and availability, but the sources cited here do not provide a comparable independent statistic for reliability, rescue outcomes, or adoption. No brand can be ranked for real-world emergency performance from these compatibility details alone.
