Bellingcat expands investigative capacity by combining professional investigators with citizen journalists, volunteers and audience contributions. Its model makes open-source research easier to join through a public toolkit, community discussion and workshops, while editorial standards require evidence to be checked and conclusions to be assessable.
How does Bellingcat crowdsource investigations?
Bellingcat describes itself as “an independent investigative collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists brought together by a passion for open source research.” Its investigations use publicly available online material and verifiable methods; participation can widen the pool of people looking for relevant information.
The process has several connected parts:
- Community discussion: Bellingcat promotes a volunteer community and Discord server where researchers can discuss investigations and collaborate. Bellingcat’s homepage is the entry point to its community information.
- Audience contributions: Bellingcat’s contact guidance encourages submissions that include crowdsourcing or audience participation. It says reader-added resources have helped important investigations progress.
- Shared methods: The Online Investigation Toolkit makes tools and practical guides easier to discover, giving contributors a common starting point.
- Editorial checks: Findings must be assessed against evidence rather than accepted simply because a contributor supplied them.
More contributors can search across different languages, platforms, images, documents and locations. Shared methods can also make a finding easier for others to reproduce. That is a reasonable implication of the model, not a measured claim about how much crowdsourcing increases the number or speed of investigations.
Can volunteers help with Bellingcat investigations?
Yes. Bellingcat invites people to take part through community discussion, audience submissions and volunteering. These routes differ in how directly they connect a participant to a specific investigation and how much structure they provide.

| Route | Time and skill | Interaction and contribution | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toolkit | Self-guided; users choose how much time to spend and which skills to develop. | Independent learning rather than direct collaboration on an investigation. | Public online resources. |
| Discord | Flexible participation; useful for discussion with other researchers. | Community interaction, with opportunities to discuss investigations and collaborate. | Community access is promoted by Bellingcat; check its homepage for current details. |
| Volunteering | Commitment and required skills depend on the opportunity. | Can contribute to investigative work; check the current volunteer information for specific openings and expectations. | Availability and application details may change. |
| Workshops | Scheduled learning with subject-specific depth. | Training with Bellingcat, rather than necessarily contributing to a live investigation. | Dates, availability and any commercial terms can change; check the official workshops page. |
Bellingcat’s contact guidance says audience participation is encouraged, though it is not a requirement for an article. A useful contribution should therefore be relevant, clearly sourced and presented in a way that lets investigators assess it.
What is the Bellingcat Toolkit?
The Online Investigation Toolkit is a collection of open-source investigation resources, including tools and methodological guides. It is intended to help people find practical resources for online research without needing to start from scratch. Bellingcat says the toolkit was developed with participation from its volunteer community.
Bellingcat’s 2024 annual report records the toolkit launch period through the end of 2024 as producing 140 tool deep dives, 200,000 page views, more than 50,000 unique visitors and participation by 25 volunteers. These figures describe that period, not a current usage count or a recurring annual total.
Using the toolkit is a self-directed way to learn Bellingcat-style OSINT. Finding a tool is only the beginning: a resource can help locate or analyze material, but it does not by itself establish that a claim is true.

How does open-source intelligence get verified?
Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is research based on publicly available information. Public availability does not guarantee accuracy: a post, image or document can be incomplete, misleading or misattributed. Bellingcat’s editorial standards require checking claims against corroborating evidence.
For anonymous-source information, its Editorial Standards & Practices state: “All information from anonymous sources will be rigorously checked against open source evidence and other data.” The standards also emphasize presenting evidence so readers can assess the conclusions.
Rank #4
- Check the material: assess the source and the context in which an image, document or post appeared.
- Seek corroboration: compare information with other open-source evidence and data, rather than relying on a single unsupported account.
- Show the reasoning: make the evidence and the steps to a conclusion understandable to readers.
Crowdsourcing broadens who may find relevant material; verification determines whether that material can support a published conclusion. Those are separate jobs, and more contributors do not remove the need for editorial scrutiny.
