Meta’s Tiramisu is a research VR headset prototype built to explore what happens when unusually high image detail, brightness and contrast are combined. Its headline figures are 90 pixels per degree (PPD), 1,400 nits and roughly three times Quest 3’s contrast—but it achieves them in a very large form factor with a 33° × 33° field of view. It was not announced as a headset for sale.
What is Meta’s Tiramisu headset?
Tiramisu is an OPALS (Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems) research prototype from Meta Reality Labs, not a consumer product with a retail price or launch date. Its purpose is to study the perceptual effect of combining high resolution, brightness and contrast in VR.
UploadVR reported on 7 August 2025 that Meta planned to demonstrate Tiramisu and the Boba prototypes at SIGGRAPH 2025. The conference schedule described the presentation as “Hyperrealistic VR: a 90-PPD, 1400 nits and high contrast headset.” That describes a research demonstration, not a product announcement.
Why is Tiramisu so huge?
The prototype uses heavy, expensive glass lenses and has been described as having a “comically large” form factor. Its size is part of the physical optical design behind the research prototype; it is not a published consumer-headset weight or specification. Meta has not announced a retail version, so there is no confirmed shipping design to compare with it.

What do Tiramisu’s specifications mean?
Meta Reality Labs OPALS reported Tiramisu’s central angular resolution at 90 PPD, brightness at 1,400 nits, and contrast at about three times Quest 3’s. PPD means pixels per degree of viewing angle; the 90 PPD figure refers to the center, not an overall resolution rating for every part of the view. The contrast figure is a comparison with Quest 3, rather than a standalone contrast ratio.
| Measure | Tiramisu | Quest 3 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Central angular resolution | 90 PPD, reported by Meta Reality Labs OPALS in 2025 | 25 PPD, the OPALS comparison baseline |
| Brightness | 1,400 nits, reported by Meta Reality Labs OPALS in 2025 | 100 nits, the OPALS comparison baseline |
| Contrast | About 3× Quest 3, reported by Meta Reality Labs OPALS in 2025 | Comparison baseline for the stated 3× figure |
| Field of view | 33° × 33° | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison |
| Weight | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison |
On those reported measures, Tiramisu has 3.6 times Quest 3’s central PPD and 14 times its brightness. Those ratios describe the specific OPALS figures; they do not mean every aspect of the image or headset is improved by the same factor.

How does Tiramisu differ from Boba 3?
Tiramisu and Boba 3 are separate research prototypes aimed at different parts of the VR experience. Tiramisu prioritizes image realism metrics. Boba 3 targets a much wider view, while retaining high per-eye resolution. Meta DSR reported Boba 3’s 2025 specifications as follows:
| Measure | Tiramisu | Boba 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Field of view | 33° × 33° | 180° horizontal × 120° vertical |
| Central angular resolution | 90 PPD, Meta Reality Labs OPALS, 2025 | 30 PPD, Meta DSR, 2025 |
| Per-eye resolution | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison | 4K × 4K per eye, Meta DSR, 2025 |
| Weight | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison | 660 g in VR; 840 g with passthrough, Meta DSR, 2025 |
| Computing requirements | Not stated in the cited OPALS comparison | Yang Zhao said it requires a top-of-the-line GPU and PC system |
The figures reflect different priorities, not a simple winner. Tiramisu’s narrow 33° × 33° field of view contrasts with Boba 3’s ultra-wide target. Boba 3 also has substantial practical requirements: Meta DSR optical scientist Yang Zhao said, “It’s not going to easily hit a mass-market price point. And it requires a top-of-the-line GPU and PC system.”

Can you buy Tiramisu?
No. The sources describe Tiramisu as a research demonstration, not a retail listing, and give no price or launch date. Quest 3 is the commercial comparison headset behind the prototype’s quoted PPD and brightness ratios; those comparison figures should not be read as an announcement that Tiramisu will become a Quest model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Tiramisu the same as Meta’s newer VR glasses?
No. Meta’s separate 2026 Meta VR Glasses announcement described glasses weighing about 100 grams and planned for spring 2027. Those glasses are distinct from both Tiramisu and Boba 3; the Tiramisu prototype’s large optical design should not be attributed to that separate product.
