Yes. At its 2018 launch, the ZTE Tempo Go was described as the first Android Go smartphone to launch in the United States. ZTE listed it at $79.99 and named AT&T and T-Mobile as U.S. carriers. Its low price came with entry-level hardware: 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a 5-inch, 854×480 display.
Was the Tempo Go really the first Android Go phone in the U.S.?
Launch-era reporting identified the Tempo Go as the first Android Go handset to launch in the U.S. TechCrunch reported in 2018 that it would have that distinction when it debuted the following month (TechCrunch). This is a claim about U.S. launch timing, not about the first Android Go phone worldwide.
ZTE’s 2018 launch coverage listed a $79.99 price and sales through ZTE’s website, with AT&T and T-Mobile named as U.S. carriers (ZTE). Those are historical launch details, not confirmation of current availability or present-day carrier compatibility.
What are the ZTE Tempo Go’s specifications?
ZTE’s launch-era specifications describe a compact, basic smartphone built around a 5-inch screen and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 210 processor (ZTE).

Can the Tempo Go use a microSD card?
Yes. ZTE listed a separate microSD slot, so a card can add storage without replacing the phone’s SIM. That is useful on a handset with only 8GB of internal storage, although the launch specifications do not state a maximum supported card capacity.
Does the Tempo Go work on AT&T or T-Mobile?
ZTE’s launch material named AT&T and T-Mobile as U.S. carriers. It does not establish that every Tempo Go model, or a phone bought used today, will work on either network now. The available launch details also do not specify supported bands. Before buying, verify the exact handset model and its compatibility with the intended carrier; the historical carrier names alone are not enough to confirm service.

What did Android Go mean on a phone this inexpensive?
Android Oreo (Go edition) was Google’s software configuration for entry-level devices with 512MB to 1GB of memory. Google described it as three parts: an operating system optimized for constrained hardware, lighter versions of Google apps, and a Play Store tuned for these devices (Google Android Developers Blog).
Google said average app performance was 15% faster and preinstalled apps used 50% less space. Those are Google’s reported figures for the Go edition, not independent measurements of the Tempo Go. The software aimed to make limited memory and storage more usable; it did not upgrade the phone’s processor, screen or battery.

What were the tradeoffs at the $79.99 launch price?
The price made the Tempo Go a low-cost entry point to Android, but the hardware was constrained even by the standards implied by its Go-edition software. Its 1GB RAM and 8GB storage left little room for apps and files; the 854×480 display, 5MP and 2MP cameras, Snapdragon 210 and 2,200mAh battery were all modest components (ZTE, 2018).
The phone’s significance was chiefly that it brought Android Go to a U.S. launch at a sub-$100 price, rather than that it offered midrange performance. The cited specifications and availability information are from 2018; anyone considering a purchase now should first confirm that a used or refurbished unit is actually available and that its exact model suits their carrier.
