For simple narration and timed text, YouTube’s built-in Shorts editor is a practical starting point. If you want templates and more explicit control over layered video, audio, titles, captions, and effects, Adobe Premiere on mobile is a documented alternative. The right choice depends on how much editing control you need and whether you want to finish inside YouTube or use a separate editor.

This is a comparison of documented workflows, not a universal ranking: the available information does not establish a current, like-for-like feature and price comparison across CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, Canva, and every other popular editor.
Use YouTube’s editor for a simple voiceover and timed text
YouTube’s Shorts editing help says, “Tap Voiceover to record audio and narrate your Shorts.” To position the narration, move the marker to the point where it should begin, then record. The native editor also lets you add on-screen text and adjust its timeline so text appears and disappears at chosen moments; filters are available as well. See YouTube Help’s Shorts editing tips.
This route suits a Short that needs narration and text without a more elaborate design workflow. The cited guidance does not document a full graphics-design suite or a detailed multi-track workflow for YouTube’s native editor, so creators who need those controls should consider a separate editing app.

Choose Adobe Premiere mobile for templates and layered editing
Adobe describes a dedicated YouTube Shorts workspace, with templates and presets, effects, transitions, titles, layered video and audio, text overlays, captions, and direct publishing to YouTube. These features make it a useful option when a Short needs more than a basic voiceover and timed text. Check the Adobe Premiere mobile overview for current details; Adobe notes that mobile features can differ by platform.
Adobe’s more detailed guidance about voiceover, titles, captions, and graphics is specifically for Premiere on iPhone. Confirm that the features you need are available on your device rather than assuming the iPhone workflow applies identically to every mobile platform. The overview was last updated December 4, 2025.

- Narration: Can you record inside the editor, place the narration where it belongs, and adjust its level?
- Caption and text control: How easily can you create, style, and time captions or other on-screen text?
- Graphics: Do you need templates, effects, stickers, or image overlays for the look you want?
- Editing control: Are basic timing changes enough, or do you need layered tracks and a more flexible timeline?
- Publishing: Is direct publishing to YouTube useful, or would you rather export a file?
- Device and cost: Confirm the current operating-system availability, regional access, and price for your device. The workflows covered here do not establish a complete current price comparison.

No external microphone is required to use either editing workflow. If you want to record with a phone-compatible lavalier microphone, treat it as an optional accessory and confirm that its connector works with your phone. The editing guidance establishes how to record voiceover, not that any particular microphone improves audio.
