Clip-on earbuds can work well for workouts, but they are not guaranteed to stay put or feel comfortable on every ear. A clip avoids an ear-canal tip, yet still presses against the outer ear; stability also depends on your ear shape and how much you move. Check the exact model’s resistance rating, then test the fit during the movements you actually plan to do.
How secure are clip-on earbuds when you exercise?
Fit can be secure during walking or lifting and still shift during sprints, jumps or other high-motion exercise. In a hands-on review published by TechRadar on April 27, 2026, reviewer Becca Caddy found the EarFun Clip 2 comfortable and secure during ordinary exercise use, but said it moved during sweaty sprint intervals. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a prediction of how the earbuds will fit your ears.
For a meaningful fit check, try the earbuds during the workout’s most demanding movements—not only while standing still. Notice whether they slide, bounce, need readjustment or cause pressure as the session goes on. A fit that works for a walk may not work for running intervals.
Will clip-on earbuds feel comfortable?
Because clip-ons sit on the outer ear rather than relying on a tip inside the canal, they may suit people who dislike in-ear pressure. But the clip still makes contact with the ear, and comfort depends on the shape and sensitivity of that contact area as well as the clip’s pressure. A fit that feels fine at first can become uncomfortable during a longer session.

Shokz says the silicone contact point on its OpenDots ONE is designed to minimize ear pressure. That is the manufacturer’s description of its design, not independent evidence that every wearer will find it comfortable. Try the exact model for a full session if possible, and treat soreness or a persistent pressure point as a sign that its fit may not suit you.
What to check before using clip-ons for a workout
- Retention: Test the movements in your routine, especially sprinting, jumping and quick changes of direction.
- Pressure: Check for pinching or soreness at the outer-ear contact points during a full session.
- Sweat and water resistance: Verify the rating for the exact earbuds and, separately, their case. A resistance rating is not permission to submerge a device.
- Controls: Check whether you can operate the model’s controls while moving. Shokz lists touch controls for its clip-on models, while soundcore describes the C40i as having physical controls; those are design details, not comparative usability tests.
- Awareness and volume: Open-ear positioning may let you hear more of your surroundings, but it does not guarantee safety. Keep the volume appropriate and stay alert to your environment.

If a clip shifts or creates a pressure point, a different retention style may work better. Open-ear ear-hook designs are an alternative rather than a clip-on: Philips describes its TAA6709 as using ear hooks and a rubberized anchor, with an IP55 rating.

Other clip-on products make model-specific design claims. Skullcandy says its Push 720 Open has IP67 dust and water resistance and promotes it for running and workouts. soundcore describes the AeroClip’s flexible open-ring design as built to endure 20,000 bends and provide a flexible, secure fit. For the C40i, soundcore says attachable ear grips are intended to improve stability during workouts. These are manufacturers’ claims, not independent evidence that a particular model will fit you securely.
