That figure is a threshold, not a guarantee: the connection must also be stable, and the Fire TV Stick, TV, HDMI path, streaming app and subscription must all support Ultra HD. Amazon notes that some apps, including Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps; Netflix’s own Fire TV guidance specifies a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps.
How much internet speed does 4K on Fire TV need?
Amazon says Fire TV 4K Ultra HD requires a connection of at least 15 Mbps. Its guidance also says some video apps—Netflix is one example—recommend at least 20 Mbps. These figures describe different things: Amazon’s 15 Mbps is its general Fire TV baseline, while 20 Mbps is an app recommendation cited by Amazon.
Netflix’s Fire TV Ultra HD requirements specify a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps. That is Netflix’s stated minimum for its Ultra HD playback, not a universal minimum for every streaming service. Check the requirements for the specific app you use.
Neither threshold guarantees uninterrupted 4K in every home. The published guidance emphasizes connection speed and, in Netflix’s case, stability; it does not promise that a particular speed will prevent buffering under all network conditions.

What else must support 4K?
The exact Fire TV Stick model
Not every device called a Fire TV Stick supports 4K. Netflix lists Fire TV Stick 4K as Ultra HD capable, and Amazon’s device comparison distinguishes 4K models from non-4K models. Check your exact model in Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications comparison rather than relying on the product family name.
A Fire TV Stick 4K is a suitable device for the 4K use case, but replacing a stick will not by itself improve your broadband speed or fix weak Wi-Fi.

The TV and HDMI connection
Amazon requires an Ultra HD TV and HDCP 2.2 support on the relevant HDMI-connected home-theater devices. If your Fire TV Stick connects through an AV receiver or soundbar, that equipment and the HDMI path to the TV also need to support the required copy protection. Netflix likewise lists a compatible Ultra HD display and HDMI connection among its requirements.
The app, subscription and playback setting
Ultra HD availability depends on the streaming service and your subscription. Netflix requires an Ultra HD subscription plan, as well as a supported device and compatible display. Its guidance also directs users to choose Auto or High quality so the playback setting permits Ultra HD.

Why might 4K not work even when your speed test is high?
A speed test above 15 Mbps does not establish that every 4K requirement is met. Check the setup in this order:
- Confirm the Fire TV Stick model. Verify that the exact model supports 4K; some Fire TV Stick models do not.
- Confirm the TV resolution. The connected display must be an Ultra HD TV.
- Check the whole HDMI route. Ensure that any receiver or soundbar between the Fire TV Stick and TV supports HDCP 2.2. Amazon says Fire TV may show a notification when it does not detect HDCP 2.2.
- Check the service and subscription. Confirm that the app supports Ultra HD on your device and that your plan includes it.
- Review the app’s quality setting. For Netflix, use Auto or High quality, as its Ultra HD guidance specifies.
- Check connection stability at the Fire TV Stick. The relevant question is whether the device has a stable connection during playback, not just whether a separate speed test can briefly reach the stated threshold.
Amazon also directs Fire TV users to set resolution to Auto. If the device reports an HDCP 2.2 issue, check each connected device and cable in the HDMI path before changing other settings.
