You can experience virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) through a web page when the browser, device, and requested features are compatible. The technology behind it is WebXR: a set of browser interfaces that lets web content work with immersive hardware and sensors. It is not a headset or a standalone app, and support is not universal.
What WebXR does in a browser
The W3C describes the WebXR Device API as a way for websites to access VR and AR devices, including sensors and head-mounted displays: W3C WebXR Device API. A site can offer content inside an ordinary page, or request an immersive session that uses a compatible headset or mobile device. Whether that request succeeds depends on both the hardware and the browser implementation.
WebXR distinguishes inline experiences, which remain within the page, from immersive VR and AR sessions. The available session types and capabilities vary by device, browser, and experience. A page should check support for the particular session it intends to start rather than treating “WebXR support” as one universal yes-or-no feature.
What you need to use an immersive web experience
Headset-based VR or AR
Use a browser that implements the session type the site requests, on a compatible headset or other supported device. For example, Meta documents WebXR sessions in a compatible browser and describes its Quest Browser development workflow here: Meta’s WebXR overview. That does not mean every browser, headset, or WebXR feature is supported on every version.

WebXR AR on Android
Google’s WebXR AR requirements call for an ARCore-supported Android device, a compatible browser, and Google Play Services for AR installed and enabled. The page also requires a secure context: HTTPS qualifies, as does localhost for local development. Google states that Android Emulator is not yet supported for WebXR. How to check whether your browser supports a session
Test the intended combination of browser, device, session mode, and features. A support result for inline content does not prove that immersive AR or VR will work. The official WebXR Samples site includes a browser support check and examples.

- Open the site or support check in the browser you plan to use, on the target device.
- Check the exact mode the experience needs, such as immersive VR or immersive AR.
- For AR on Android, verify the ARCore device requirement, Google Play Services for AR installation and enablement, and secure connection.
- Allow the browser-controlled request when you choose to enter the experience. If the session cannot start, confirm the device, browser, and requested capabilities rather than relying on a browser name or user-agent string alone.
For developers, Meta advises using runtime feature detection instead of inferring support from the user-agent string. Its Quest Browser specifications explain that browser and Chromium versions change; a user-agent value is not a guarantee of a feature.
How VR tracking differs from AR capabilities
Tracking determines how an experience responds to movement. The W3C specification defines 3DoF as tracking rotation and 6DoF as tracking both rotation and translation. In practical terms, 3DoF can respond to where you turn your head, while 6DoF can also respond to movement through space. Sensor-based alternatives cannot reproduce all high-end capabilities, such as headset presentation, 6DoF tracking, and tracked input devices.

AR may also depend on optional capabilities beyond the core session, such as detecting real-world surfaces or estimating environmental lighting. The W3C Immersive Web publications list modules for hit testing, depth sensing, lighting estimation, controller and hand input, and layers: W3C Immersive Web publications. These standards work items do not guarantee that a given browser-device combination implements each capability.
How developers build and test WebXR experiences
A developer can work directly with the WebXR API and examples or use a framework or SDK. Meta recommends its Immersive Web SDK path for Quest development and documents a workflow that includes desktop emulation, testing in a physical headset, and deployment in its WebXR overview.

- Use samples or a framework to iterate: the WebXR Samples page demonstrates API features and offers a support check.
- Use desktop emulation as a development aid: it can help with iteration, but it does not establish compatibility or performance on the final hardware.
- Test on the target device and browser: validate the actual session mode and optional features the experience uses.
Privacy, security, and comfort considerations
Immersive experiences can involve sensor-derived information about a user’s surroundings or movement. The W3C’s WebXR privacy and security considerations discuss risks including profiling, device fingerprinting, and input sniffing. The WebXR model includes safeguards such as secure-context and focus conditions, and browsers may use trusted interface elements or adjust exposed data. These protections and exposed capabilities can vary.
WebXR should not be confused with unrestricted access to raw camera data: what a site can access depends on the APIs, browser, device, and permissions involved. For people building experiences, respect browser prompts and user intent, make entering and exiting clear, and describe tracking capabilities accurately. Those are practical design implications, not a universal clinical comfort standard.

WebXR’s standards status
As of the W3C publication index dated 9 June 2026, the core WebXR Device API is on the Candidate Recommendation Draft track. Related AR and capability modules are published separately, and their implementation is not uniform. The appropriate expectation is therefore feature-by-feature support on a particular browser and device—not blanket compatibility based on the word “WebXR.”
