1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart in the game’s graphics menu: lower Texture Quality one step, turn off an optional high-resolution texture pack, and replay the same area. If stutter or texture pop-in persists, try the game’s own upscaler at a quality-focused setting, then reduce render resolution slightly if needed. Make one change at a time and compare both image quality and smoothness; no setting guarantees a fixed VRAM saving across games.
How to reduce VRAM usage in games
Use a repeatable scene with detailed surfaces and movement, such as an area with foliage, walls, or character textures. Keep the resolution and other settings unchanged while you test each adjustment. Look for reduced stutter as well as blur, texture pop-in, or artifacts in motion.
- Check the starting configuration. Confirm the game is using the intended GPU. Note the display resolution, Texture Quality setting, and whether an optional high-resolution texture pack is installed.
- Lower Texture Quality one step. Replay the same scene and check close-up surfaces and distant detail. If the image becomes too soft, restore the setting and try the next step instead.
- Disable an optional high-resolution texture pack. If the game offers one, turn it off and retest. Such packs can add VRAM demand, but their effect varies by game.
- Try the game’s upscaler. If supported, enable its native FSR, DLSS, or other upscaling option. Begin with the most quality-focused setting that keeps performance acceptable, then assess image stability and detail while moving.
- Lower render resolution modestly if needed. Make a small change, retest, and decide whether the improvement in smoothness is worth the loss of clarity.
- Test optional high-memory features individually. Ray tracing can require additional VRAM, according to NVIDIA’s VRAM guide. Turn it down or off only if doing so improves the problem in your game.
- Consider hardware only after testing. If the game still has a repeatable limitation at the resolution and visual quality you want, compare GPUs by VRAM capacity, overall performance, compatibility, and current price—not capacity alone.
There is no universal consumer monitoring threshold that proves a game is running out of usable VRAM. Microsoft’s DirectX specification explains that video memory is finite and that exceeding an application’s current memory budget can create pressure, including placement in slower system memory on some discrete-GPU configurations. A high usage reading by itself does not establish that this is happening: judge the result by repeatable symptoms and by whether a setting change improves them.
Which graphics settings use the most VRAM?
Texture quality, optional extra-large texture packs, and resolution are sensible settings to test first, but their actual memory costs depend on the game and its resource allocation. NVIDIA notes that higher resolutions generally require more VRAM and that some games offer optional extra-large texture packs. Ray tracing can add demand too. These are useful clues, not a universal ranking or a promise that lowering one setting will fix stutter.

Image-quality tradeoffs are title-specific. In NVIDIA’s 2015 Grand Theft Auto V PC graphics guide, High and Very High textures are described as mostly alike at ground level, with reduced sharpness and lower-quality distant textures at High; NVIDIA says High may help minimize VRAM-related stuttering in that game. Normal textures reduce fidelity more noticeably. That older GTA V example should not be treated as a forecast for current games.
The same guide’s 1080p chart used a minimum-settings baseline of 1,066 MB and estimated another 1,335 MB for the game’s best textures and 1,211 MB for 8x MSAA. Those figures belong to that specific old game, version, and chart methodology; they are not modern game requirements or transferable estimates of savings.

Does DLSS or FSR reduce VRAM use?
Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the output resolution, which can help performance. NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution this way. AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-level spatial upscaler, while AMD recommends using a game’s native FSR where available because it can be optimized for that title. The implementation and visual result vary, and the cited vendor material does not establish a fixed VRAM reduction for every game.
For a fair comparison, check sharpness, image stability, and artifacts during motion—not only in a still image. Use the game’s native upscaler where available, then compare its quality-focused options with the game’s native-resolution image. The best choice depends on the title, GPU compatibility, and your tolerance for reconstruction artifacts.

Should you change driver settings?
Prefer the game’s own controls before forcing global driver overrides. AMD’s Radeon settings documentation says Surface Format Optimization may improve performance and lower video-memory use, and recommends leaving it enabled. AMD describes Texture Filtering Quality as having a small performance and image-quality impact; Standard is the default preferred setting. These controls are vendor-specific, so check the relevant driver documentation and change only a setting you understand.

An upgrade is a last resort when controlled setting changes leave a repeatable limitation and you still need the same resolution or image quality. Compare memory capacity alongside total GPU performance, compatibility, target resolution, and price. VRAM capacity alone does not establish that a card will deliver a particular frame rate or quality level.

For context, AMD’s product table lists the Radeon RX 7900 XTX at 24GB with a 4K target, RX 7900 XT at 20GB with a 4K target, RX 7800 XT at 16GB with 1440p and 4K targets, and RX 7700 XT at 12GB with a 1440p target. These are AMD’s vendor positioning labels, accessed in 2026, not guarantees for every game. AMD also says its peak-VRAM tests were run on June 28, 2023, using an RX 6950 XT with Adrenalin 23.7.1 at 4K maximum settings across 14 named games; that method note is not a general VRAM requirement.
Likewise, NVIDIA’s statement that some games can run best at High on an 8GB RTX 4060 Ti while allowing Ultra on its 16GB counterpart is vendor guidance for those circumstances, not a capacity rule for all games. NVIDIA says most games can run at maximum settings on both cards with the same performance. Its reported claim that RTX Memory Utility can reduce ray-tracing VRAM use by up to 50% concerns a developer optimization tool, not a consumer setting or a guaranteed saving in released games. NVIDIA also says its DLSS 4 Frame Generation model upgrade uses less video memory on RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs, without specifying a percentage in the cited article.
