Then use Fire TV’s Network Status to see whether the weak link is between the Stick and your router or between the router and the internet. Restart the affected equipment and improve Wi-Fi placement before clearing app data or buying an Ethernet adapter.
1. Find out whether the problem is the network or one app
Try playback in more than one streaming app. If several apps buffer, look first at the Fire TV-to-router connection, your internet connection, or the device. If only one app is affected, start with basic network checks, then use that app’s support guidance.
On the Fire TV Stick, open Settings > Network and select your connected network to view Network Status. Amazon says this tool separates the connection between the Fire TV device and the router from the connection between the router and the internet. That distinction helps narrow down where the fault lies. Depending on the compatible model, Network Status may also provide recommendations, speed-test results, or a repeatable speed test. - If the Fire TV-to-router connection is the problem, focus on Wi-Fi placement or, if appropriate, wired Ethernet.
- If the router-to-internet connection is the problem, check your modem, router, and internet service.
- If Network Status looks healthy but just one app struggles, try that app’s troubleshooting steps.
2. Restart the Fire TV Stick and network equipment
Restarting is a good first fix because it is quick and does not change app settings. For connection or playback trouble, Amazon advises unplugging the Fire TV power adapter for one minute, then reconnecting it. You can also restart from the Fire TV settings menu where available. If the issue continues, restart the modem and router. Amazon’s instructions vary by troubleshooting context: its connectivity guidance calls for disconnecting both devices for one minute, reconnecting the modem and waiting for service, then reconnecting the router; its Prime Video guidance says to unplug them for 30 seconds before reconnecting the modem and then the router. 3. Improve the Wi-Fi connection
If Network Status points to the connection between the Stick and router, reduce the distance between them if you can. Move the router closer or position the Fire TV Stick where it can receive a stronger signal, then check Network Status again. Amazon recommends moving the devices closer as a troubleshooting step; it does not mean distance is necessarily the only cause.

Also consider whether the Stick is tucked behind a TV or otherwise in a spot where the wireless signal may be weak. If the connection remains poor after repositioning, wired Ethernet may be worth considering—but only after checking that the Stick’s generation supports the adapter you plan to use.
4. Check whether your connection meets 4K streaming guidance
Amazon lists a minimum internet speed of 15 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD. It also notes that some video apps, such as Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps. These are Amazon’s stated thresholds, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback: available bandwidth can vary, and a connection that meets a stated minimum may still have trouble at times. - Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Use the result shown by Network Status on compatible models as one clue. If the router-to-internet connection is slow or unreliable, an Ethernet adapter will not increase the speed your internet provider delivers. In that case, check the modem and service connection rather than expecting a wired link to fix an upstream problem.
5. If only Prime Video is affected, troubleshoot the app
After the network and restart checks, try the Prime Video-specific steps if other apps play normally. First check for Fire TV software updates. Depending on the software version, the update option is under Settings > My Fire TV or Settings > Device & Software. Then, if needed, clear Prime Video’s cache and data under Settings > Applications. Clearing data can reset app-specific information, so use it for a Prime Video-only problem rather than as a first response to buffering across all apps. 6. Check the HDMI path if the problem is 4K or UHD playback
If playback works but you cannot get 4K resolution, or UHD playback fails, check the display connection as well as the network. Amazon says 4K requires an Ultra HD TV and an HDMI connection that supports HDCP 2.2. The requirement applies through connected equipment such as receivers and soundbars, not just to the television.
- On Fire TV, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution.
- Set the video resolution to Auto.
- If Fire TV displays a notice that HDCP 2.2 is not detected, check whether the TV, HDMI port, receiver, or soundbar in the signal path supports it.

7. Consider Ethernet only if Wi-Fi is the weak link
A wired connection can avoid a poor local Wi-Fi link, but it is not a remedy for slow internet service. Amazon suggests Ethernet where possible, and its specifications indicate that adapter needs vary by Fire TV Stick 4K version: some versions list 10/100 Mbps Ethernet through an external dongle, while others require an Amazon Ethernet adapter. Confirm the exact generation and adapter compatibility before buying. Amazon’s connectivity guidance and Fire TV device specifications.
Use Ethernet when Network Status or placement checks indicate that the Fire TV-to-router Wi-Fi link is the issue, and when running a cable is practical. If the router-to-internet connection is the failing part, wired networking will not correct it.
