Then disable the appropriate router setting, Windows Server scope, or DHCP configuration, and test a client to verify its IP address, gateway, and DNS settings.
What disabling DHCP does
DHCP automatically gives devices network configuration, including an IP address and options such as the default gateway and DNS servers. A DHCP scope defines the address range and related options for a subnet. Turning off the only DHCP service on a subnet means devices may not receive new settings automatically when they join or renew their leases.
Identify which device or service is answering DHCP requests before making a change. The setting might belong to a home router, a Windows Server scope, or a Linux host running dnsmasq. Their controls are different, and disabling a scope is not necessarily the same as stopping an entire server.
Check these things before you turn it off
- Find the current DHCP server and affected subnet. Confirm which device is answering clients and whether the change should affect one subnet or every subnet served by that host.
- Confirm a replacement is ready. A replacement DHCP server must serve the same subnet and supply the settings clients need, especially the gateway and DNS servers. In an Active Directory domain, a DHCP server must also be authorized to operate properly; authorization is a safeguard, not a way to disable an already authorized server or scope. See Microsoft’s Windows Server DHCP installation and configuration guide.
- Plan for clients that will use static addresses. Record the correct subnet, gateway, and DNS values. Keep manually assigned addresses out of the range a remaining DHCP scope may issue; Microsoft discusses exclusions in its DHCP scope guidance.
- Preserve administrative access. If your computer depends on the server you are changing, you could lose connectivity to the router or server interface. Arrange a suitable management connection or the manual IP settings recommended for the device.
Disable DHCP on a home router
Router menus vary by model and firmware, so there is no reliable universal menu path. Check the manual or support page for your exact router, and establish whether it is the main router or operating as an access point before changing its DHCP setting.

For NETGEAR Nighthawk routers, follow NETGEAR’s instructions, How do I disable the DHCP server feature in my Nighthawk router? NETGEAR notes that when DHCP is off and no other DHCP server is available, you may need to assign your computer an IP address manually to reach the router.
Disable a Windows Server DHCP scope or service
Changing one subnet
Windows Server uses scopes to assign addresses and configuration to clients on a subnet. If only one subnet should stop receiving leases from this server, change the relevant scope rather than disabling the server for every scope. Microsoft’s setup guide describes scope activation as the step that lets the DHCP Server begin assigning addresses. Use the scope controls appropriate to your installed Windows Server version and confirm that you have selected the intended subnet.

Changing every subnet served by the host
Stopping or disabling the DHCP Server role or service can affect all scopes and subnets on that server. Check every scope and its clients before making a server-wide change. Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025, and Azure Local 2311.2 and later are covered by Microsoft’s cited scope guidance, but the sources do not establish one universal disable sequence for every version and deployment. Consult the documentation for your installed version and chosen control.

dnsmasq can provide DHCP and DNS, as well as other network services. Before changing it, determine whether the same instance provides DNS or another function you want to keep. If the goal is only to stop DHCP, change the DHCP configuration rather than disabling the entire service. Configuration file locations and service commands vary by Linux distribution; use that distribution’s documentation instead of assuming a single command applies everywhere. The dnsmasq documentation describes its role in providing network services.

Verify the change and troubleshoot client problems
- Renew a client connection. Reconnect a device or renew its lease so it requests current settings.
- Inspect its network configuration. Confirm the IP address and subnet are expected, and check that the gateway and DNS servers match the intended configuration.
- Check connectivity. Verify the client can reach the local router and resolve domain names. If there is no replacement DHCP server, configure suitable manual settings for the subnet; when the router provides the route to the internet, its LAN address is typically the gateway.
- Investigate unexpected settings. Check for another DHCP server on the network segment and for overlapping or incorrect scopes. Microsoft documents a specific case in which a server with a disabled scope may send a DHCPNAK when a client tries to renew a lease for that scope; this is a documented scenario, not an outcome guaranteed by every disabled-scope configuration. See Microsoft’s DHCPNAK troubleshooting article.
- Recover access if needed. Use the router or server’s recommended management method and address configuration. If the changed server was the only source of DHCP, restore it or bring a correctly configured replacement online before expecting clients to obtain settings automatically again.
Choose the right control for the change
| What you need to change | Control to consider | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP on a home network | The router’s DHCP setting | Confirm the exact model and firmware, whether the router is the main router or an access point, and whether another server will serve the subnet. |
| DHCP for one Windows Server subnet | The scope for that subnet | Confirm the selected scope and the clients it serves. |
| DHCP for every subnet on a Windows Server host | The server role or service | Review all scopes and confirm the broader impact is intended. |
| DHCP on a Linux host running dnsmasq | The DHCP configuration | Check whether DNS or other dnsmasq services must remain available; consult distribution-specific documentation. |
