Provino entered AI discussions not by becoming an AI-chip company, but because designers of AI systems-on-chip (SoCs) saw possible uses for its existing iFabric network-on-chip (NoC) interconnect IP. In an October 2018 report, EE Times described Provino as still focused on semiconductor IP—not on building an AI processor.
What did “by the back door” mean?
The phrase describes an indirect route into AI. Provino was developing iFabric, an interconnect architecture intended to help different processing and other IP blocks communicate inside a system-on-chip. Some AI SoC designers considered whether that technology could suit their designs. Provino’s stated mission had not changed, and the company did not present itself as an AI chip startup.
This account is historical: it reflects what EE Times reported on October 10, 2018, not Provino’s current status or present adoption.
What was iFabric?
EE Times described iFabric as a “packetized and serialized bus” with virtual channels. The report said it supported AXI 3/4, APB, and AHB interfaces and offered multiple clocking options, from server-class high-speed designs to consumer devices.

The stated goal was to make it easier to integrate third-party and in-house IP, and to add or remove IP blocks when developing derivative products. That made the interconnect relevant to SoC design more generally; it did not make iFabric an AI processor.
Why might AI SoC designers care about interconnect?
An AI SoC can contain many processing and supporting blocks that need to exchange data. The 2018 report identified scalable interconnect, higher-bandwidth distribution, communication among tiled convolutional neural networks, and multicast as needs that designers were considering.
Provino said multicast in constrained environments could reduce power and latency in AI SoCs. That was a company claim reported by EE Times, not an independently benchmarked result in the article. The report provides no test data establishing a performance or efficiency gain.
What applications and customer activity did the report identify?
EE Times listed autonomous vehicles, AI, and AR/VR among application areas under consideration. It also reported that an unnamed European automaker was using an early iFabric iteration for autonomous-vehicle ASIC design. The story does not name the automaker or establish the outcome of a separate prospective contract it mentioned.

These examples showed why a general-purpose interconnect might attract attention from AI and other SoC designers; they do not establish broad adoption or later customer results.
What funding and competitive context did EE Times report?
On October 10, 2018, Provino announced an $8 million Series A led by Dell Technologies Capital, with participation from individual industry veterans, according to the EE Times report.
The same article described Netspeed Systems as the company then developing technology closest to Provino’s: SoC design tools and interconnect-fabric IP. It reported that Intel had acquired Netspeed the previous month and quoted Jim Keller, then Intel’s senior vice president and general manager of its Silicon Engineering Group: “Netspeed’s proven network-on-chip technology addresses this challenge, and we’re excited to now have their IP and expertise in-house.” This is a comparison made in 2018, not a current assessment of the market.

The article captures Provino’s pitch and the interest its interconnect IP drew from AI SoC designers, but it does not independently validate iFabric’s capabilities or performance. Shailendra Desai, identified as Provino’s founder and CEO, said, “I don’t pretend to know everything about AI, but we are all learning as we go along.” He also cautioned, “I don’t want to sound like we have already solved the whole problem.”

For evaluating any SoC interconnect approach, the report points to questions worth investigating: which interfaces it supports, what clocking options it offers, how it scales across device classes, how it handles third-party and in-house IP, and whether multicast changes power or latency under the intended workload. EE Times did not provide a head-to-head evaluation of those dimensions.
