To troubleshoot an 8b/10b link, combine an analog eye and timing analysis with clock recovery, decoded symbols, and—when failures are intermittent—hardware triggers for coding and synchronization errors. An eye can reveal signal-quality problems, but it cannot by itself prove that the received symbols or protocol sequence are valid.

What 8b/10b decoding tells you

8b/10b encoding maps each 8-bit data word to a 10-bit symbol. The encoder chooses between legal forms according to its running disparity, which is +1 or −1. This keeps the long-term numbers of ones and zeros nearly balanced and provides transitions that help clock recovery. The balance also makes the code suitable for links that use AC coupling, transformer coupling, or optical transmission.

A decoded symbol is therefore more informative than a raw 10-bit pattern alone: its interpretation depends on the running-disparity state. A receiver or decode tool must maintain that state and align the data to 10-bit symbol boundaries. A coding violation, disparity error, or loss of alignment can point to a different failure from a merely noisy-looking waveform.

Verify the signal in a sequence

  1. Establish the test conditions. Identify the serial standard, line rate, compliance test point, and expected symbol or word format. The standard determines the applicable electrical limits, decode expectations, and any prescribed eye-mask test.
  2. Check the measurement setup. Connect a suitable differential probe at the specified test point. Confirm that the oscilloscope has adequate analog bandwidth, sample rate, acquisition memory, and timing resolution for the link and analysis you plan to perform. Probe fidelity and loading matter: the measurement setup can alter the signal you are trying to diagnose.
  3. Inspect the analog signal. Acquire the waveform and build an eye diagram. Apply the relevant eye-mask test if the standard defines one. Keep the test point and setup consistent with the compliance procedure you are following.
  4. Recover clock and make bit decisions. Configure clock-data recovery for the signal, then convert the waveform to binary data using a documented decision threshold and hysteresis. Incorrect clock recovery, threshold, or hysteresis can create apparent decode errors that are measurement artifacts rather than link faults.
  5. Decode the symbols. Enable 8b/10b character or word decoding and display the results alongside the waveform. Confirm that the decode view is aligned to symbol boundaries and that its running-disparity state is appropriate for the captured sequence.
  6. Capture rare failures deliberately. If an error is intermittent, use available hardware triggers for disparity errors, invalid characters, loss of byte synchronization, comma alignment, or a distinctive word. A software search can only find an event that was captured; dedicated hardware triggering can target an event as it occurs.
  7. Relate the decoded event to the waveform. For each error, zoom to the associated transition and compare the decoded bit or symbol with the analog trace. Look for a marginal threshold crossing, glitch, jitter event, crosstalk burst, or amplitude distortion at that time.

Read the eye diagram without over-interpreting it

An eye diagram overlays signal behavior across unit intervals. A closing eye or mask hit can be consistent with excessive jitter or noise, insufficient bandwidth or slow rise time, attenuation, inductive overshoot, crosstalk, or intersymbol interference. It helps show whether the signal has voltage and timing margin at the measurement point; it does not identify every cause by itself.

Interpret the eye together with the decoded protocol view. A passing physical-layer check does not rule out intermittent faults under other test conditions, and an eye mask alone cannot establish that synchronization or decoded symbol sequences are correct. Conversely, an apparent eye or decode problem may be caused by an unsuitable probe, threshold, or clock-recovery setup, so verify the measurement configuration before attributing a failure to the link.

Why a generic NRZ trigger may miss the fault

A generic NRZ pattern trigger looks for electrical bit patterns. It does not inherently track the running-disparity-dependent choice of 8b/10b symbols or align its trigger to 10-bit character boundaries. That can make it a poor fit for locating a coding violation or a rare loss of synchronization.

An oscilloscope with dedicated 8b/10b trigger hardware may synchronize on comma symbols and trigger on characters, multi-character words, disparity errors, or other coding violations. Those capabilities are especially useful when the event is rare and a conventional acquisition window is unlikely to contain it. Trigger support varies by instrument and option, so check the exact model and enabled features.

Separate physical-layer faults from protocol or receiver faults

Use the time-correlated waveform and decode view to test whether the protocol error coincides with an electrical event. The distinction is not always absolute—marginal physical signaling can create a decode error—but the correlation helps narrow the investigation.

  • The oscilloscope kit is specially designed for professional teaching and training in electronics. Please note that this kit need to be assembled and soldered by yourself.
  • Evidence consistent with a physical-layer issue: the bad character lines up with a marginal threshold crossing, glitch, deterministic or random jitter event, crosstalk burst, or amplitude distortion. Check the signal at the relevant test point and review probe loading, bandwidth, clock recovery, and threshold settings.
  • Evidence consistent with an encoding, alignment, or receiver issue: the analog eye and timing margins appear healthy, but the decoded sequence still violates the protocol. Inspect the expected encoding, symbol alignment, running-disparity state, and receiver logic.
  • When the evidence is inconclusive: capture the failure with a suitable hardware trigger, then compare the same event across the analog trace and decoded sequence. A healthy-looking eye from one capture cannot exclude a transient fault that did not occur during that acquisition.

Hardware serial triggers combined with eye and jitter analysis are useful for infrequent errors because they let you examine the electrical event and its decoded consequence in the same time-correlated capture.

Account for synchronization requirements in the target protocol

8b/10b decoding is only one part of protocol verification. For example, JESD204B receivers require multiple error-free 8b/10b characters during synchronization, and each character’s disparity is related to the preceding symbol state. A JESD204B verification plan should therefore check both analog eye and timing margin and the synchronization-character sequence. A signal that looks acceptable electrically may still fail to establish synchronization if the expected character sequence is not received correctly.
