Meta says it will notify users in WhatsApp when usernames are available in their country; it has not announced a fixed worldwide completion date.

Meta announced reservations on June 29, 2026, before the username feature’s broader launch. It says availability will expand over the coming months, while later feature-tracker reporting described full usernames as rolling out to a limited number of Android and iOS users. The option may therefore appear for one account before another, even in the same country. Meta’s announcement says users will receive an in-app notification when usernames are available in their country.
Why the Username option may not appear
The rollout is phased, not a single Android-wide switch-on. Availability may vary by country, account, app channel and rollout cohort. If Settings > Account has no Username entry, update WhatsApp and check again later; the absence of the setting does not establish that your account is ineligible permanently. Meta has not set a date by which the feature will reach every account worldwide.

What a WhatsApp username changes about phone-number privacy
Usernames are optional. When the feature is enabled, someone contacting you for the first time can use your username without receiving your phone number. A phone number is still required to register WhatsApp, so the username changes how new contacts can reach you; it does not remove the number from your account. WhatsApp describes usernames as a way to control who sees your number. WhatsApp’s username FAQ explains the feature as an optional way to connect while controlling phone-number visibility.
How people find and contact you
WhatsApp is not adding a public username directory or autocomplete suggestions. A new contact needs the exact username you share. You can also optionally add a username key: in that case, the person must know both the username and the key to contact you for the first time. This offers an extra layer of control, but it also means the contact needs both details accurately.

WhatsApp also applies anti-impersonation restrictions. Existing Instagram and Facebook handles are reserved for their owners. The company says it holds names associated with high-profile people, government entities, celebrities and verified accounts, as well as lookalikes, and blocks terms considered prone to scams. That means a name can be unavailable even if it appears unused elsewhere.

Creators, small businesses and organizations can claim a matching Instagram or Facebook username by linking WhatsApp with Meta Accounts Center. This is a route to matching identities across Meta services, not a general guarantee that any handle from another service can be claimed. WhatsApp Business App and Business Platform accounts can also choose usernames.

What to expect from the rollout
Meta said reservations opened ahead of the username launch because WhatsApp serves more than three billion people. The company’s June 29, 2026 announcement described availability as expanding “over the coming months”; it did not provide a final date for every country or account. The feature is software-only and requires no accessory or special Android hardware.
