For Windows, NVDA is the closest free, open-source alternative to Microsoft Narrator. For Linux, Orca is the documented open-source option. They are screen readers for different operating systems, not interchangeable apps: choose based on the desktop and software you use, plus your speech and Braille needs.
Which Narrator alternative should you choose?
| Option | Platform | Output | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVDA | Windows 10 and later; supported Windows Server releases are listed in its 2026.3 beta guide | Synthetic speech and Braille | Windows users who want a free, open-source screen reader with support for a range of Windows apps |
| Orca | Linux and Solaris environments using AT-SPI | Speech and refreshable Braille | People using a Linux desktop or software built on AT-SPI |
| Microsoft Narrator | Windows 10/11 | Built-in Windows screen reader | Windows users who want to start with the screen reader already included with the operating system |
Microsoft describes Narrator as a screen-reading application built into Windows 11, with nothing to download or install. See Microsoft’s Narrator guide.
NVDA: the closest open-source alternative on Windows
NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free, open-source screen reader for Microsoft Windows. NV Access lists support for Windows 10 and later on its download page, which currently offers NVDA 2026.2. The organization says NVDA supports popular web browsers, email clients, chat software, music players, Microsoft Word, and Excel in its about page.
That makes NVDA the natural option to try if you are staying on Windows but want another screen reader. Compatibility depends on the particular application and workflow, so a list of supported app categories should not be read as a guarantee that every feature in every program will work identically.

Orca is the relevant choice if your computer runs a Linux desktop or your software exposes accessibility through AT-SPI. It is not a Windows replacement for Narrator: it belongs to a different operating system and accessibility stack.
How to decide between NVDA, Orca, and Narrator
- Stay on Windows: Try NVDA alongside Narrator and judge both with the applications you actually use. NVDA is free to download from NV Access.
- Use Linux or an AT-SPI desktop: Orca is the platform-matched option. Its fit depends on whether your desktop applications and toolkits support AT-SPI.
- Need a quick built-in Windows option: Start with Narrator, which Microsoft includes with Windows 11.
- Use speech in a particular language: Check the screen reader’s speech options and the voice or synthesizer available on your system. NVDA’s beta guide describes its built-in synthesizer as supporting over 80 languages; that figure describes the synthesizer, not every possible voice or application combination.
- Rely on Braille: Confirm that your display, connection, and preferred Braille tables work with the screen reader and version you plan to use. NVDA documents Braille output and LibLouis translation; Orca documents refreshable Braille.
Using a refreshable Braille display
A refreshable Braille display can be a useful companion to either screen reader. Before choosing a display, verify compatibility with your operating system and screen-reader version, whether it connects over USB or Bluetooth, and whether the Braille tables you need are supported. The cited screen-reader documentation establishes Braille support, but does not establish compatibility for every display model.

Is NVDA better than Narrator?
There is no universal winner established by the available official feature descriptions. NVDA is a strong alternative to evaluate on Windows because it is free and open source and documents support for common browsers, office software, email, chat, and other apps. Narrator is already built into Windows 11. Which works better for you depends on your apps, preferred keyboard workflow, speech needs, and Braille setup; the cited sources do not provide an independent head-to-head benchmark.
