To use a different sound for a particular app, change the sound in that app’s notification category instead.
Choose whether to change every notification or one app
Samsung provides separate settings for the scope of the change. The system-wide notification sound applies across notifications; an app-specific sound applies to a selected app category. Samsung’s U.S. support page says, “You can also customize unique notification sounds for each app using the App settings menu.” Samsung’s notification-sound guidance describes the overall setting and app customization.
- All notifications: choose a system-wide notification sound.
- One app or notification type: open the app’s notification settings and choose a category sound.
- Your own audio file: copy it into the Notifications folder in internal storage, then select it from the sound list.
Change the sound for all notifications
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Notification sound.
- Preview the available sounds and tap the one you want.
This setting is separate from Ringtone, which controls incoming calls, and from System sound, which controls device interactions and other system events. The menu names and layout can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Set a different notification sound for an app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app you want to customize.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose a notification category, such as General notifications, then tap Sound.
- Select the sound you want for that category.
An app may have several notification categories, and available choices depend on the app. If you want to change only one kind of alert from an app, select its corresponding category rather than changing the system-wide tone.

If you cannot find notification categories
On newer software, Samsung may require you to enable category controls first. Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings and turn on Manage notification categories for each app. Then return to Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications and open the category you want to edit. Samsung’s New Zealand instructions for app notification sounds include this prerequisite; its menus may differ by model and software version.
Use your own audio file as a notification sound
- Open My Files.
- Find the audio file and copy it.
- In internal storage, open the Notifications folder and paste the file there.
- Return to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound, or to an app category’s Sound setting, and select the copied file.

Fix common notification-sound setting problems
- The sound option is missing: check whether Manage notification categories for each app is enabled under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.
- You can see the app’s notification switch but not a sound choice: open a notification category itself, then look for Sound. A category’s notification toggle is not the sound selector.
- Your copied audio file does not appear: confirm it is in internal storage’s Notifications folder, then reopen the sound list.
- The menu labels do not match: Samsung notes that screenshots and options vary by device model and software version. The precise alternate path depends on your Galaxy model and installed software.
Do not use Separate app sound to change an alert tone. That feature routes an app’s media playback to a Bluetooth speaker or headset; it is not the notification-sound setting. Samsung distinguishes this audio-routing feature from notification sound controls.
