Texas Aircraft Manufacturing and OXIS Energy proposed a 90 kWh lithium-sulfur battery for an electric version of the Colt S-LSA, the eColt. The announcement described an intended flight of about two hours and 230 statute miles (approximately 200 nautical miles); the available evidence does not establish that the aircraft entered commercial service by October 2026.
What did the eColt announcement actually promise?
The eColt was a proposed electric conversion of Texas Aircraft’s Colt S-LSA light-sport aircraft, intended for flight training and personal transportation. In 2020, OXIS Energy and Texas Aircraft announced a 90 kWh lithium-sulfur battery system. New Atlas reported the intended range as 230 miles, while contemporaneous AOPA coverage described more than two hours of flight and approximately 200 nautical miles—roughly the same distance.
Those numbers describe a development goal. The announcement is not evidence of a completed flight at that range, aircraft certification, or routine passenger operations. Battery capacity and an intended range, on their own, do not demonstrate an aircraft’s real-world performance.
The battery figures were company claims
OXIS said the planned pack would reach 400 Wh/kg and be 40% lighter than a comparable lithium-ion system. Those are announced specifications and a comparison from the project participants, not independently verified results in the cited reporting. The 2020 New Atlas report also quoted OXIS on a 470 Wh/kg prototype pouch cell and projected 500 Wh/kg within a year and 600 Wh/kg by 2025. The last two figures were forecasts, not confirmed milestones in the evidence available here.

Pack and cell energy density are different measures. A pouch cell is one component; an aircraft battery pack also needs packaging, electrical connections, protection and control systems. A cell figure therefore cannot be treated as the energy density of a finished aircraft pack.
How does lithium-sulfur compare with lithium-ion for aircraft?
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) is attractive to aviation because carrying less battery mass for a given amount of stored energy could help an aircraft. In the OXIS design described in the 2020 New Atlas report, sulfur replaced the conventional lithium-ion cathode chemistry and the cell used a lithium-metal anode. Sulfur is abundant, and Li-S has high theoretical specific energy. But theoretical potential and early cell results do not settle whether a battery is light, durable, safe and production-ready as an aircraft pack.

| Comparison | Lithium-sulfur evidence in the cited reporting | Lithium-ion evidence in the cited reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Gravimetric energy density | OXIS announced 400 Wh/kg for the proposed eColt pack in 2020; New Atlas reported a separate 470 Wh/kg OXIS prototype pouch-cell figure that year. Gelion later reported a 395 Wh/kg pouch cell in 2024. These are not identical product or measurement stages. | OXIS battery-development head Mark Crittenden gave a range of 100–265 Wh/kg for typical lithium-ion designs, depending on optimization, including for peak power or long life. This is a statement quoted by New Atlas, not an independent like-for-like comparison with the proposed eColt pack. |
| Volumetric energy density | OXIS described more than 800 Wh/L as a future target in 2020; it was not a verified eColt pack result. | Not stated in the cited reporting. |
| Cycle life | OXIS described upwards of 500 cycles as a development aim in 2020, not an established service-life result. | Not stated in the cited reporting. |
| Charge time and power output | Not stated for the eColt pack in the cited reporting. | Not stated in the cited reporting. |
| Safety and durability | The reported engineering concerns include lithium-metal degradation and dendrite formation, which can cause short circuits. OXIS said its design used a thin ceramic layer at the anode; this was a company description, not independent certification. | No directly comparable puncture, thermal-stress or durability result was stated in the cited reporting. |
| Materials and supply | Sulfur is abundant and could lower material costs, but the cited reporting did not establish a finished-pack cost or production supply chain. | The cited reporting did not provide a directly comparable aircraft-pack cost or supply-chain analysis. |
| Aircraft readiness | The eColt battery was announced as a project; the cited reporting does not establish certification or commercial operation. | The reporting gives a broad energy-density comparison, not a certified lithium-ion aircraft system for this eColt project. |
The figures should not be read as a head-to-head test. They come from different dates, sources and development stages; the reports do not provide an independent flight trial or a matched comparison of complete aircraft packs. For aviation, energy per kilogram is only one part of the decision: useful power, heat and fault management, cycle life, pack mass, certification and manufacturing consistency also matter.
What happened to OXIS and the eColt after 2020?
The cited evidence does not establish that the Texas Aircraft eColt was certified, sold or put into commercial service by October 2026. Nor does it establish current retail availability of the proposed 90 kWh OXIS pack. That is a limit on what the cited announcements show, rather than proof that no further work took place.

There is a later sign of continuity for OXIS-related battery technology. On 4 April 2024, Gelion said it had acquired OXIS-related lithium-sulfur intellectual property and had fabricated a 395 Wh/kg, 9.5 Ah pouch cell. Gelion CEO John Wood said, “This result further validates our Li-S technology plan.” Gelion characterized the result as early-stage and described intended development for applications including eVTOL aircraft, drones and stationary storage. It does not demonstrate a certified aircraft battery or a revived eColt program.
Other proposed eColt suppliers
The 2020 project announcement named WEG as the proposed powertrain supplier and AKAER Group as the proposed battery-management-system supplier. Those named roles belong to the announced project; the cited material does not establish that the proposed aircraft or supply arrangements reached production.

What would prove a 230-mile electric-aircraft range?
A credible range claim needs more than a battery energy-density figure. For this project, the useful evidence would include a completed aircraft, a defined test configuration and conditions, a measured flight result, and the status of the aircraft’s certification. For a battery intended for service, cell-level energy density would also need to be distinguished from pack-level performance, with durability, power delivery, safety and production readiness documented. The 2020 eColt announcements set an ambitious target, but the cited reporting does not supply that validation.
