For 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, the Samsung UBD-M9500 and UBD-K8500 are the documented UHD options here; the BD-J5900 is a standard Blu-ray player, not a 4K disc player. These are older models, so treat them as model examples rather than current best buys: check your regional variant, the unit’s condition, disc playback, included remote and accessories, seller, and local availability before buying.

Which Samsung Blu-ray player should you choose?

Choose a UHD model if you want to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The M9500 is the more fully connected option in the documented specifications, with two HDMI outputs, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth transmit and receive. The K8500 is another Samsung UHD model with HDR, UHD upscaling, and built-in Wi-Fi. Choose a conventional player such as the BD-J5900 only if standard Blu-ray and DVD playback meet your needs; its documentation does not describe UHD disc playback.

Samsung’s Singapore M9500 listing covers its features, while its US K8500 sheet documents the latter model’s specifications. Regional variants can differ, so confirm the exact model code and local disc compatibility on any listing.

Samsung also describes private listening with Bluetooth headphones. [Samsung product specifications] Regional model variant and present-day app status. Samsung says Bluetooth headphones are not included.
UBD-K8500 4K Ultra HD playback with HDR and UHD upscaling, built-in Wi-Fi, and support for 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media in Samsung’s US specification sheet. [Samsung US specification sheet (2016)] Regional variant, condition, remote and accessories, disc compatibility, and whether the TV and connection support the HDR format you want.
BD-J5900 Standard 3D Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi, screen mirroring, and Opera TV Store features described in Samsung’s 2015 sheet. It is not documented as a UHD Blu-ray player. [Samsung US specification sheet (2015)] Do not assume its historical smart features or apps remain available; verify playback and network features if they matter to you.

What makes a Samsung UHD Blu-ray player different?

UHD discs require a UHD-capable player and TV

A UHD Blu-ray player is needed to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Samsung’s K8500 US sheet explicitly says “4K UHD TV Required” for 4K UHD viewing. It describes the K8500 as offering four times the resolution of full 1080p HD; this is Samsung’s 2016 specification, not an independent comparative test. [Samsung K8500 specification sheet]

Upscaling is not the same as UHD disc playback

Both the M9500 and K8500 list UHD upscaling. Upscaling can output compatible lower-resolution content at a higher resolution, but it does not turn a standard Blu-ray disc into a native 4K UHD disc. If your goal is to watch UHD Blu-ray releases, confirm the player explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback.

HDR and connections depend on the setup

The K8500 specification lists HDR, and Samsung lists HDR for the M9500. The M9500 has two HDMI outputs, which can help in some setups with separate video and audio connections. Check your receiver, television, cables, and regional player variant for compatibility with your intended video and audio arrangement; the specifications alone do not establish that every combination will work.

Samsung 3D Blu-ray DVD Disc Player With 4K UHD Upscaling & Built-in Wi-Fi Plus CubeCable 6Ft High Speed HDMI Cable (Renewed)
  • 4K / UHD Upscale - This 3D Blu-ray player supports full HD 1080p Blu-ray disc playback from its HDMI output, and can also upconvert standard definition DVDs and Blu-ray movies to near 4K quality when used with a 4K television. Color and model may vary.

Check these details before buying an older player

  1. Confirm the exact model and disc format. Match the model code on the listing and device to the manufacturer’s specifications. For UHD discs, select a model documented for Ultra HD Blu-ray, not merely Blu-ray with upscaling.
  2. Verify the unit can play discs. Ask the seller to confirm playback with the disc types you plan to use, and review return rights. These are practical checks for a used device, not a claim that any listed model has been tested here.
  3. Check condition and included items. Confirm whether the remote, power cable, and any other accessories you need are included and working.
  4. Check the TV and audio chain. Confirm your TV supports the resolution and HDR features you expect, and check whether your receiver or sound setup needs one or two HDMI connections.
  5. Verify network features separately. A model’s historical smart-TV or app-store listing does not prove that apps still work. Samsung UK’s M9500 support page displays a firmware file modified 12 December 2019 and manuals dated 2017–2018; that regional listing is not proof that support has ended everywhere or that no other regional files exist. [Samsung UK M9500 support page]
  6. Check local availability and seller terms. Current stock, prices, seller quality, and app compatibility are not established here. Compare those details for your location before committing to an older model.

What Samsung’s certification announcement does—and does not—tell you

Samsung announced on 4 May 2016 that the UBD-K8500 had earned UHD Alliance Premium Certification. The announcement supports the model’s historical UHD positioning, but it is not a current buying recommendation or evidence about today’s availability, condition, or performance.
