The design keeps the same basic arrangement as the current PS5 but adds fine grooves to the liquid-metal application area to make cooling more stable. The teardown also shows a larger, redesigned cooling system, a different memory layout, an M.2 SSD slot, and a disc-less launch configuration.
What does the PS5 Pro teardown reveal?
Sony’s engineering teardown shows a console built to handle higher performance with changes across the cooling system, motherboard, and power supply—not simply a faster processor. Sony’s official teardown features Shinya Tsuchida, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead, and Shinya Hiromitsu, PS5 Pro Electrical Design Lead.
- Liquid metal remains: It serves as the thermal interface material between the main processor and cooling assembly.
- Cooling hardware is redesigned: Sony shows three exterior airflow blades, a larger fan, larger intake and exhaust surfaces, and a larger heat sink with additional copper heat pipes.
- The motherboard has a revised memory layout: Eight GDDR6 chips handle gameplay, while a ninth DDR5 chip is dedicated to slower system processing.
- Expansion hardware is present: The teardown shows an M.2 SSD slot and a Wi-Fi 7 module.
- The launch console is disc-less: Sony’s launch configuration includes a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller; the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive is sold separately.
Does the PS5 Pro still use liquid metal?
Yes. Sony continues to use liquid metal as the thermal interface material on the main processor. Its purpose is to transfer heat from the processor to the cooling assembly. Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said, “Since liquid metal has far superior cooling capabilities compared to conventional TIMs, we adopted it after conducting various tests to ensure its safety.”
The PS5 Pro retains the basic liquid-metal structure, but Sony added fine grooves where the material is applied. Tsuchida said the grooves are intended to make the cooling effect more stable. Sony does not say they eliminate leaks or guarantee a particular result when the console is placed in a given orientation, and the teardown does not establish long-term failure rates.

Why did Sony add grooves to the liquid-metal area?
Sony says the grooves help stabilize the liquid-metal application and cooling effect. They are a change to how the thermal interface is applied within the existing basic structure—not evidence, by themselves, of a confirmed defect or a guarantee against liquid-metal movement.
The teardown explains Sony’s design intent, but it does not provide independent measurements of long-term liquid-metal migration or failure rates. Sony also warns that home disassembly risks injury and can void the manufacturer’s guarantee, so the engineering video is not a repair procedure.
Is the PS5 Pro better cooled than the regular PS5?
The teardown shows more and redesigned cooling hardware, but it does not provide comparative temperature or noise measurements. Sony’s stated design goal is to move more air while supporting the Pro’s higher performance. Tsuchida said, “PS5 Pro is a high performing console, so it requires more air to cool it down.”

- A larger fan with revised blade geometry is intended to move more air quietly.
- Larger intake and exhaust surfaces support the increased airflow requirement.
- A larger heat sink and additional copper heat pipes provide more cooling hardware around the processor.
- A higher-output power supply supports the system’s greater power needs. Electrical Design Lead Shinya Hiromitsu said the PS5 Pro outputs about 48W more than the current PS5 and is also larger.
These are hardware and design-intent findings, not proof that the Pro runs cooler or quieter in every workload. The teardown does not report laboratory temperature comparisons, acoustic measurements, or independent benchmark results.
How much faster is the PS5 Pro, according to Sony?
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2024 announcement gives the following figures compared with the current PS5. They are Sony’s stated specifications and performance claims, not independent test results:

Sony also highlights enhanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-assisted upscaling technology. The official announcement describes the console as the next step in PlayStation hardware evolution; it does not establish how much improvement every individual game will achieve. Results depend on the game and how its developers support PS5 Pro features.

Sony’s teardown shows a physically larger motherboard with more internal layers. Around the system-on-chip are eight GDDR6 memory chips used for gameplay, plus a ninth DDR5 chip for slower system processing. The board also includes the M.2 SSD slot and a Wi-Fi 7 module.
The M.2 slot gives owners a way to expand storage with a compatible drive. Check the console’s current requirements for capacity, firmware, and heatsink compatibility before buying or installing an SSD; the teardown identifies the slot but is not a full compatibility list.

Can you add a disc drive or storage to PS5 Pro?
Disc drive
The PS5 Pro launch configuration is disc-less. Sony’s 2024 announcement lists a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller in the launch configuration at a US MSRP of $699.99; the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive is sold separately. That MSRP is the launch price, not a statement of current price or availability. Owners who need physical-game or UHD Blu-ray support should confirm disc-drive compatibility and live stock before purchasing.
M.2 SSD
The teardown shows an M.2 SSD bay, so storage expansion is supported through that slot. Use a compatible M.2 drive and verify the applicable capacity, firmware, and heatsink requirements before installation.

What the teardown does—and does not—establish
Sony’s video documents the console’s engineering design and stated intent. It does not provide independent benchmark testing, temperature or acoustic measurements, long-term liquid-metal reliability rates, or repair-success data. Independent teardown coverage from iFixit adds observations such as tool-free panel removal, an accessible fan, and retained repair-friendly connectors, but those observations should not be confused with Sony’s own claims or a guarantee that home repair is risk-free.
