To sign into your Apple Account—Apple’s current name for Apple ID—use the same email address or phone number and password you already used. On an iPhone or iPad, sign in through Settings; on a Mac, use System Settings; on the web, go to account.apple.com. A new device or web sign-in may also ask for a six-digit verification code.

Apple ID and Apple Account are the same account

Apple says, “Apple ID is now Apple Account.” The name changed, but your account did not: the same email address or phone number and password continue to work for iCloud, the App Store, and other Apple services. Apple’s current terminology appears in the sign-in settings on its devices.

Sign in on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap the Apple Account sign-in control at the top of the screen. If you are already signed in, tap your name instead to see account settings.
  3. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Apple Account.
  4. Enter your password.
  5. If prompted, enter the six-digit verification code shown on a trusted device or sent to a trusted phone number.

Labels and screen layout can vary with operating-system version or region, but the sign-in control is at the top of Settings.

Sign in on a Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Click Sign In in the sidebar.
  3. Enter your Apple Account email address or phone number, then your password.
  4. Enter a verification code if prompted.

Sign in on the web or access iCloud

Go to account.apple.com, choose Sign In, and enter your Apple Account credentials. Provide the six-digit code if Apple requests it. Web sign-in is one situation in which Apple can require two-factor verification. Once signed in, use the available account and service options for your needs.

Why Apple asks for a verification code

Two-factor authentication adds a second check to your password. Apple describes it as “an additional layer of security for your Apple Account, designed to make sure that you’re the only one who can access your account — even if someone else knows your password.” For a new-device or web sign-in, Apple may ask for a six-digit code shown automatically on a trusted device or sent to a trusted phone number.

A trusted device is an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, or Mac already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Keep a trusted phone number available too, so you have another way to receive a code if a device is unavailable.

If you forgot your Apple Account password

If you still have a trusted Apple device, Apple’s on-device reset route is usually the most direct. The device may ask for its passcode or login password to authorize the change.

Reset on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Sign-In & Security, then Change Password.
  3. Enter the device passcode and follow the prompts.

Reset on a Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Click your name, then Sign-In & Security.
  3. Click Change Password, enter the Mac login password, and follow the prompts.

If you do not have a trusted device

Start account recovery at iforgot.apple.com. Apple may impose a security delay before allowing a password change or other critical account changes. The time required can depend on the circumstances, so do not assume recovery will be immediate.

Plan for a lost device or phone number

Your trusted devices and phone numbers are central to receiving sign-in codes and recovering access. Apple warns that if one phone is both your only trusted device and your only way to receive codes, losing or damaging it can leave you unable to get a verification code.

  • When possible, add a trusted phone number or keep another trusted device available.
  • Check that you can access the phone number on file before relying on it for a new-device sign-in.
  • If you no longer have access to a trusted factor, use Apple’s recovery route rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.

Optional: use physical security keys

Apple supports physical security keys for accounts with two-factor authentication. Setup requires at least two FIDO Certified keys; Apple lists YubiKey 5C NFC as compatible with most Mac and iPhone models. With keys enabled, signing in requires the password plus a security key.
