Ubuntu Pro for Devices is Canonical’s per-device commercial subscription for Ubuntu-based IoT deployments. Canonical’s current product page advertises up to 15 years of security maintenance, while its April 2024 launch announcement described a 10-year term; the applicable duration depends on the device and subscription context, so confirm it in a quote. The offering combines security maintenance for Ubuntu and thousands of open-source packages with fleet-management and compliance-related capabilities.
What Ubuntu Pro for Devices is—and how long it lasts
This is a subscription attached to a physical IoT device, not a separate downloadable Ubuntu image. Canonical’s current product page, checked in 2026, describes a one-time fee per device and advertises up to 15 years of security maintenance. Its 9 April 2024 launch announcement specified 10 years. Those figures describe different published statements, not a guaranteed term for every device: confirm the supported device, coverage and term with Canonical or its partner before deployment.
The product page also advertises more than 1,800 additional high- and critical-severity patches. Treat this as Canonical’s product-page claim, not a promise that every device receives the same patch set or that all software on a device is covered.
What the subscription covers
Ubuntu Pro for Devices extends security maintenance beyond the base operating system to popular open-source packages and frameworks. Canonical names Python, Docker, OpenJDK, OpenCV, MQTT, OpenSSL, Go and ROS among the covered technologies. The exact package versions, maintenance scope and eligibility depend on the deployment and subscription terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
The offering also brings compliance and hardening automation. Canonical describes capabilities related to FIPS 140, CIS benchmarks and DISA-STIG hardening. It references FedRAMP, NIST, HIPAA and FISMA as well as the EU Cyber Resilience Act and the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark. These capabilities can support a compliance program; they do not, by themselves, certify a device or make a deployment compliant. Confirm which controls, tools and support are included for the plan and geography in question.
How device management and hardware services fit in
Landscape provides centralized device management and patching for fleets. Canonical also offers IoT services around certified hardware, device enablement, optimized Ubuntu images and long-term over-the-air (OTA) software updates. These services complement the subscription, but should not be assumed to be included in every device subscription or quote.

- Certified & Future-Ready: Espressif-certified ESP32-WROOM-32E ensures full hardware compatibility and lifetime firmware support. Upgraded 8MB Flash handles IoT data and OTA updates.
- Dual-Core Speed: 240MHz dual-core processor runs Wi-Fi/BLE and sensors 2x faster. 38 GPIO pins (10 RTC) support SPI/I2C/UART for LCDs, motors, and industrial sensors.
- Plug & Play Dev: USB-C driver pre-installed: upload code instantly on Windows/Mac/Linux. Works with Arduino IDE, MicroPython, and Espressif IDF.
- All-Environment Ready: Run Wi-Fi smart switches (Home Assistant) and BLE tracking on one board. Industrial-grade stability (-40°C~85°C) for outdoor/automated systems.
- Advantages: The ESP32 development board offers high performance, low power consumption, and rich wireless connectivity, making it suitable for developers of all levels, especially beginners.
Canonical’s 2024 launch announcement named ODM partners ADLINK, AAEON, Advantech and DFI. The vendors’ statements in that announcement describe the value they see in maintaining embedded systems and their dependencies; they are not independent guarantees of a particular device’s support term. Canonical’s IoT solution page separately describes a 15-year hardware maintenance commitment. Hardware maintenance and Ubuntu security-maintenance terms are distinct: verify both for the exact model.
Does Ubuntu Pro for Devices make an IoT product compliant?
No blanket compliance result follows from subscribing. The service offers security maintenance and tooling that may help manufacturers address requirements such as those associated with the EU Cyber Resilience Act or U.S. Cyber Trust Mark. The device maker still needs to determine which rules apply, implement the required processes and controls, and assess the finished product and deployment. Ask Canonical to identify the specific features and evidence applicable to your product, region and selected plan.

Ubuntu Pro for Devices vs. Ubuntu Core
Ubuntu Pro for Devices can be used with Ubuntu-based device deployments. Ubuntu Core is a separate IoT operating-system path built around confinement and an immutable system, with transactional OTA updates and rollbacks. Its architecture and lifecycle differ from a conventional Ubuntu deployment with Pro maintenance.
| Consideration | Ubuntu Pro for Devices | Ubuntu Core | Self-maintained Ubuntu image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Current product page advertises up to 15 years; the 2024 launch announcement said 10 years. Confirm the term for the device and subscription. | Canonical states a 12-year LTS commitment for Ubuntu Core 24 (2024). | Not stated by Canonical’s cited product information; the organization must establish its own maintenance plan. |
| Operating-system model | For Ubuntu-based device deployments; not an immutable-OS architecture by itself. | Immutable IoT OS path with confinement, transactional OTA updates and rollbacks. | Depends on how the image is built and maintained. |
| Package security coverage | Maintenance includes Ubuntu and named open-source packages and frameworks; check package and version scope. | Not stated here as comparable package-coverage terms; confirm the relevant Ubuntu Core offer. | Maintained by the deployment owner unless another service is arranged. |
| Compliance and hardening | Canonical describes automation and capabilities related to FIPS 140, CIS and DISA-STIG; these do not equal blanket certification. | Not stated here as comparable plan-specific compliance terms. | Depends on controls and services implemented by the organization. |
| Fleet management and OTA | Landscape provides centralized management and patching; Canonical also offers OTA lifecycle services. | Transactional OTA updates and rollback are part of the described OS approach. | Depends on tools and services selected by the organization. |
| Price and support level | Current product page describes a one-time fee per device; exact price and support terms are not stated here. | Not stated here as comparable price or support terms. | Not stated; costs depend on the organization’s maintenance and support arrangements. |
Choose based on the whole device lifecycle, not the headline support period alone. Compare the required package coverage, OS architecture, compliance work, fleet tools, hardware certification, support terms and total per-device cost. If you need a locked-down system with transactional updates and rollback, assess Ubuntu Core. If you are keeping an Ubuntu-based deployment and want Canonical maintenance across the OS and selected packages, assess Ubuntu Pro for Devices. For either path, obtain written terms for the exact hardware, software versions and geography.
