On a MacBook running macOS Sequoia or later, open the Passwords app, authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac account password, then select the website or app account to view its saved credential. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, look in System Settings > Passwords or Safari settings instead. The Mac account password unlocks access to saved credentials; it is not the password for the website or app.
Find a saved password in macOS Sequoia or later
- Open Passwords from Applications, Launchpad, or Spotlight.
- Authenticate with Touch ID or enter your Mac user account password when prompted.
- Select the website or app account from the list. Use the search or sorting controls to find it if needed.
- Move the pointer over the password to reveal it, then read or copy the saved credential as needed. Apple’s Passwords guide describes the app and its controls.
Passwords can also contain passkeys, verification codes, Wi-Fi passwords, and credentials shared with groups, as well as website and app passwords.
Where to look on macOS Sonoma or earlier
Apple’s instructions for older macOS versions place saved passwords and passkeys in System Settings > Passwords or in Safari settings. To check which version is installed, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Apple directs Sequoia users to the Passwords app rather than the older settings route. If the password is missing
Check iCloud Keychain
If you expected a credential to sync from another Apple device, confirm that you are signed in to the expected Apple Account and that iCloud Keychain is enabled. On Mac, check System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain, then enable iCloud Keychain if needed. Apple says it keeps passwords, passkeys, and other account details up to date on approved Apple devices; syncing cannot restore a login that was never saved. Check the browser where you saved it
A login may be stored in Safari or another browser’s own password manager instead of Apple Passwords. Check the browser you used when saving or signing in. Apple supports Password AutoFill in Safari and supported third-party browsers, but that does not establish where any particular login was stored. Apple’s Password AutoFill guide explains the feature.
Review a password security warning
In Passwords, select Security in the sidebar, then choose an account to review a warning. Apple says the app can flag commonly guessed or reused passwords and alert you when a password appears in known data leaks. If you select Change Password, you must change the credential on the website or in the app; the Mac does not change that service password automatically. Where available, Apple suggests considering a passkey, Sign in with Apple, or a strong generated password. Details are in Apple’s security recommendations guide.
