Nikon’s 2026 Small World in Motion winner shows real airway-cilia footage, but its grayscale data was later processed with an unsupervised neural-network method to produce a more vivid visualization. Scientists questioned whether some colored structures looked biologically plausible. Nikon said it was reviewing the entrant’s technical documentation; the latest report available here does not give a final ruling.
What happened to the winning microscope video?
Nikon announced Ning Xu as the winner of its 2026 Small World in Motion competition on September 16. The entry depicts abnormal movement of airway cilia in a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia, according to Nikon’s announcement.
On September 22, Nikon updated information about the entry to disclose that an unsupervised AI method had been used during post-processing. Nature reported on September 30 that researchers questioned whether some visible features were biologically plausible. On October 2, Gizmodo reported that Nikon was carefully re-reviewing Xu’s submission and had received technical documentation. That report did not state a final decision.
Did AI make the video?
That depends on what “make” means. Nikon’s description, quoted by Gizmodo, says: “An unsupervised neural-network method was subsequently used as part of the post-processing and visualization workflow to distinguish and visualize features in the grayscale data, creating a more vivid and visually engaging video.”

Xu’s account, as reported by Gizmodo, is that the original video of the cilia and their motion are real, and AI was applied to reconstructed grayscale data to distinguish and color structures with similar morphology. He said the rendering was not an anatomical claim about what those features represent. The sources available do not independently validate the processing pipeline, so the captured footage, computational rendering, and biological interpretation should be treated as separate questions.
What did scientists say looked implausible?
Researchers criticized red, blue, and purple structures shown beneath the cilia. Edward Phelps, a bioengineering researcher at the University of Florida, said the purple features resembled mitochondria but that the described arrangement “does not occur in biology.” He also questioned the blue nodules and said he did not know what the red structures represented, according to Gizmodo.

- A super sleek,multi-purpose compound microscope for viewing tiny details of specimen slides; built for clinicians, high school and university science students, and enthusiastic hobbyists alike
- Professional Siedentopf head is fully rotatable for shared use and equipped with interchangeable wide-field 10X and 25X glass eyepieces fixed at an 30 degree tilt to reduce neck strain, easily adjustable for different interpupillary distances without losing focus
- 4 DIN Achromatic objectives mounted in a revolving turret offer 6 magnification levels: 40X, 100X, 250X, 400X, 1000X, and 2500X
- Ultra-precise focusing system to make coarse and extremely fine adjustments
- Trinocular head accepts an additional eyepiece and microscope camera attachments (not included) in order to view, livestream, record, and capture magnified specimen images
Those comments are criticisms of the appearance and interpretation of the rendered features, not a definitive identification of each one. The available reporting does not establish what every colored structure represents. Developmental biologist Melanie White of the University of Queensland framed the broader concern this way: scientists “need to be able to trust that what we are seeing is grounded in the underlying measurement.”
Does Nikon’s AI rule settle whether the entry was eligible?
No final eligibility determination is established in the cited reporting. Nikon’s official Small World in Motion rules say: “AI generated videos are not permitted and Sponsor holds the right to request the original video for verification.” They also require entrants to take videos using a light microscope.

- TRINOCULAR VIEWING HEAD: This trinocular head adopts a pair of 10X super widefield eyepieces with 48 to 75mm inter-pupillary adjustment, while both ocular tubes are equipped with a (+/-6) diopter adjustable, to compensate for eye-strength difference when needed. The trinocular port Provide two adapter configurations that allow for the connection of electronic eyepieces and digital cameras, respectively, to meet the observation needs of various customers.
- 3.5X-90X STANDARD MAGNIFICATION RANGE: 0.7x-4.5x Zoom objective provides continuous zoom magnification and longer focal length for inspecting large-scale specimens, when used with the included 0.5x and 2x auxiliary lens, expands to a 3.5x—90x magnification range.
- STABLE STRUCTURE: The rectangular base of the professional stereo microscope is made of heavy duty solid steel which weights 18lb, it provides a solid foundation to fit your observational needs. The single arm boom stand offers a long and flexible working distance, while the advanced ball-bearing technology allows the arm to glide with little resistance.
- EASY OBSERVATION: This stereo microscope fixed 45-degree vertical inclination to reduce eye and neck strain, and 360-degree rotation capability to provide a more comprehensive view and enable sharing.
- ADJUSTABLE ILLUMINATION: It comes a 56S LED ring light with this stereo microscope, it provides cool, strong focused shadow-free illumination, and it's equipped with a dimmer switch, you can easily adjust the brightness and turn it on and off.
The rule sets a restriction and gives Nikon the right to request original footage; it does not itself adjudicate Xu’s particular workflow. The unresolved issue is how Nikon applies that rule to the disclosed processing of grayscale data. Eligibility under a contest rule is also distinct from whether a visualization is scientifically reliable.

The latest located report, published by Gizmodo on October 2, says Nikon was re-reviewing the information Xu submitted. Nikon said: “Xu is respectfully complying and has provided detailed technical documentation outlining the microscopy equipment, imaging methods, and processing techniques used to create the source video.” The report gives no final review result, so it does not establish that Nikon disqualified Xu or confirmed the entry’s eligibility.
