If Face ID stopped working after an iOS 18 update, start with the latest iOS update, Face ID settings, and the TrueDepth camera area. Then restart the iPhone and, if needed, reset and set up Face ID again. If setup repeatedly fails or the camera does not work, the issue may need service.
1. Install the latest iOS update
Apple recommends updating the iPhone or iPad to the latest available iOS or iPadOS version. An update is a sensible first check when Face ID problems appear after installing iOS 18 or iOS 18.5. Follow Apple’s instructions for updating your iPhone or iPad.
2. Check Face ID settings
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Confirm Face ID is set up and enabled for the feature that is failing, such as iPhone Unlock or App Store authentication. A working Face ID setup may still not be used for a particular feature if its setting is turned off.
3. Clear the camera area and check positioning
Face ID relies on the TrueDepth camera system at the top of the display. Wipe away smudges and check that a case edge or screen protector is not covering the camera. A microfiber lens-cleaning cloth can remove surface smudges, but it cannot repair a failed TrueDepth sensor.

When Face ID needs service
Contact Apple or an appropriate service provider if the TrueDepth camera is not working, or Face ID setup repeatedly asks you to position your face in the frame but never completes. These symptoms are different from a simple recognition problem and may indicate a camera or hardware fault.
Apple warns that the laser system can be disabled by improper repair or non-genuine components, creating potential eye or skin hazards. Have TrueDepth camera repairs handled by trained technicians; do not attempt hardware repair yourself.
