Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify the exact network, token contract, offering terms, people involved, and supply schedule from sources you can check independently. If a key claim cannot be confirmed—or the promoter is rushing you—pause. A checklist can expose missing evidence; it cannot make a presale safe or guarantee a return.

1. Confirm the exact token, network, and contract

Start with the identifiers, not the branding. Ask for the blockchain network and the exact token contract address, then compare them with the project’s primary documentation and the corresponding public chain record. The presale instructions, project documentation, and chain record should point to the same token and network. A familiar name or ticker is not enough to identify a token.

  • Check that the address is reproduced consistently across the project’s official documentation and the relevant chain record.
  • Look for published contract source code and determine whether it matches the contract being offered or deployed.
  • Find the independent security audit report itself. Check which contract and code version it covers, what its scope was, and whether it identifies unresolved findings. An audit logo or the word “audited” on a sales page does not establish that the offered contract was reviewed.
  • Check whether the project explains who can change the contract or issue additional tokens, if those powers exist.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin advises prospective buyers to ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether code has been published, and whether an independent cybersecurity audit has been conducted. An audit is evidence to examine, not a guarantee that a contract is secure. SEC, Investor Bulletin: Initial Coin Offerings (July 25, 2017).

2. Check what the offering actually promises

Read the presale terms and project documentation to find out what a buyer receives and what restrictions apply. A token’s rights and utility should be understandable without relying on promotional language.

  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • What rights, access, or functions does holding the token provide? Separate features that are already live from roadmap promises.
  • What are the sale price, payment method, sale dates, and conditions for receiving tokens? Check for caps, minimums, or other terms that affect your purchase.
  • Can you cancel or obtain a refund? When can the token be transferred or resold, and are there restrictions?
  • How will presale funds be used? Look for a specific explanation rather than a broad promise to “build the ecosystem.”
  • Does the project have a comprehensible business plan and roadmap? Compare claimed progress with what is demonstrably delivered.

Do not infer that a token will gain value because it has a stated use, a roadmap, or a supply cap. Demand, competitors, adoption, technology changes, liquidity, and security incidents can all affect its prospects; the CFTC discusses these as factors buyers should consider. CFTC, Customer Advisory: Use Caution When Buying Digital Coins or Tokens.

3. Verify the team and affiliated entities independently

Investigate named founders, advisers, and organizations associated with the offer using sources beyond the project’s own website and social accounts. Confirm that the people and entities exist and that their stated roles, qualifications, and previous work can be corroborated. Where a legal entity or jurisdiction is disclosed, verify those details through appropriate public records.

Check relevant professional registrations where applicable, but do not treat registration—or a lack of information about it—as a complete verdict on the offering. The SEC and CFTC both recommend due diligence on people and entities connected to an offering. Peirce’s SEC Crypto Task Force recommendations also identify team and legal-entity details as relevant disclosures; those recommendations are not binding rules. SEC Investor Bulletin; CFTC advisory; SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce, Recommendations to the Crypto Task Force, Part II (August 15, 2025).

4. Reconcile token supply, allocations, and unlocks

Do not rely on a headline such as “fixed supply” or “community-owned.” Find the full token allocation and issuance details, then check whether the figures and terms fit together.

Supply and issuance

  • What is the total supply, and can more tokens be minted? Identify who holds any minting authority and whether the project describes limits on that power.
  • Can tokens be burned, and who can initiate a burn? A burn mechanism is not, by itself, evidence of future appreciation.
  • Does the project distinguish current supply from maximum or planned supply?

Allocations and insider concentration

  • Find the amounts or percentages allocated to the presale, team, advisers, private-sale buyers, treasury, ecosystem, and community.
  • Compare the presale amount with total supply and the stated use of proceeds. Identify large or concentrated insider holdings.
  • Check whether allocation categories have clear definitions and whether the figures add up to the stated total.

Vesting and release schedule

For each allocation, check the vesting start date, any cliff, release interval, total duration, and conditions that could delay releases. Work out how many tokens could become transferable at each release point, especially for insiders or other concentrated holders. A schedule described only as “vested” is incomplete if it does not show when tokens unlock.

The SEC Crypto Task Force recommendations identify offering mechanics, allocations, use of proceeds, release schedules, lockups and vesting, token utility, supply and mint/burn mechanics, and insider holdings as relevant information for understanding an offering. They are recommendations, not a binding disclosure checklist. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce’s recommendations (August 15, 2025).

5. Compare projects by evidence, not promotional scores

If you are evaluating more than one presale, use the same evidence questions for each. Record what you verified, what the project claims but you could not confirm, and what is not disclosed. Missing evidence is not a favorable answer.

Area Evidence to look for Unresolved question to record
Code and audit Exact network and contract; published code; audit report matched to the relevant contract and code version Is the offered contract the one reviewed, and are any findings unresolved?
Team and entity Independently corroborated identities, experience, affiliated entities, and disclosed legal structure Which principals, roles, or entity details cannot be verified?
Rights and utility Plain-language token rights and a distinction between live functions and planned features What does a buyer receive now, and what depends on future delivery?
Supply and unlocks Total and planned supply, mint/burn powers, allocations, insider holdings, and release schedules How concentrated could transferable supply become, and when?
Proceeds and roadmap Specific use of funds and observable progress against stated milestones Can the claimed use or progress be independently substantiated?
Liquidity and market assumptions Clear, qualified statements about transferability and any stated liquidity assumptions Is there evidence for expected demand or a way to exit, rather than an unsupported promise?
Legal and jurisdictional context Disclosed jurisdiction and clear information about any claimed registration or exemption What does the project actually disclose, and what requires qualified legal advice?

6. Treat pressure and impersonation as warning signs

Pause when promotion relies on urgency, guarantees, or claims that obscure rather than explain the product. Warning signs include promised or outsized returns, pressure to buy immediately, unverifiable or unexplained principals, and promotion driven mainly through social media. The SEC has described crypto presale promotions in which promoters attract buyers and then sell while hype is high, leaving later buyers exposed to a rapid decline. It warns against making investment decisions solely from social-media information. SEC Investor.gov, 5 Ways Fraudsters May Lure Victims Into Scams Involving Crypto Asset Securities (May 29, 2024).

Verify websites, social accounts, audit reports, and claimed regulator communications through independently located official channels rather than links supplied in a message. A polished site, apparent endorsement, small early withdrawal, or claimed government connection does not prove an offering is legitimate. Be especially wary of demands for extra fees or “taxes” to release supposed funds: the SEC identifies this as an advance-fee scam pattern in which payment is requested before a victim can supposedly access money. SEC Investor.gov investor alert.

7. Understand the legal and practical limits of a checklist

A token’s marketing label alone does not determine its legal status. For U.S. securities-law context, the SEC’s April 22, 2026 explainer describes an investment-contract analysis that considers an investment of money in a common enterprise, a reasonable expectation of profits, and profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. Whether that analysis applies depends on the facts and circumstances. The SEC’s crypto-asset FAQs were updated September 28, 2026; consult current primary guidance and qualified counsel for the relevant jurisdiction rather than treating a general article as a legal determination. SEC, Transactions Involving Crypto Assets (April 22, 2026; last reviewed April 29, 2026); SEC Division of Corporation Finance, FAQs on Crypto Assets (updated September 28, 2026).

Even a well-documented offer can be speculative. A checklist cannot ensure that a promoter is honest, a contract has no vulnerability, a token will have buyers, or stolen or misdirected funds can be recovered. The CFTC cautions that buying solely because you expect to sell later at a higher price is speculation; the SEC also warns that recovery after fraud or theft may be limited. If you cannot verify a core claim, explain the token’s rights and unlock schedule, or understand the terms without being rushed, pause and consider advice from a qualified professional. CFTC advisory; SEC Investor Bulletin.

This is general educational information, not investment or legal advice. Legal treatment varies by jurisdiction, and presale addresses, terms, team information, audit scope, allocations, and vesting can change; verify them for the exact offering you are considering.
