The trial demonstrated that the weapon could be integrated with an uncrewed vessel; it did not demonstrate a combat attack or put Excalibur into operational service.
What happened in the trial?
The three-week trial took place at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC), near Kyle of Lochalsh in northwest Scotland. The Royal Navy says Excalibur fired and controlled an inert, recoverable version of the U.S. Navy Mk 48 Mod 4. The torpedo is reported to weigh more than 1.5 tonnes and measure nearly six metres long. Royal Navy account, 30 September 2026.
This was a weapons integration and launch demonstration, not a live combat attack. The inert test weapon was recoverable; the public account does not describe an explosive warhead or an operational engagement.
What does “historic first” mean?
The Royal Navy calls it the first successful torpedo firing by one of its uncrewed submarines. The UK government makes a broader but specifically attributed claim: that this was the first time either the UK or U.S. had launched a torpedo from an undersea uncrewed vessel rather than a crewed submarine. These are official descriptions of the trial, not evidence that every navy or uncrewed-undersea system worldwide has never attempted such a launch. UK government account.

U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle described it as “a historic first for allied undersea warfare.” That characterization reflects the significance officials attach to the demonstration; it does not mean the system is already fielded.
What did the test prove—and what remains unproven?
The trial integrated a specialist management system that enabled Excalibur to launch and control the U.S. weapon. The U.S. Navy says the work validated mechanical, electrical and software integration of an American payload on an allied autonomous vessel. In practical terms, it was a proof of concept for putting a heavyweight torpedo on an uncrewed platform.

It did not establish operational readiness, deployment, combat effectiveness, autonomous target selection or a demonstrated combat mission. The public accounts do not provide evidence about the vessel’s endurance, range, payload performance or comparative costs. Remote or autonomous operation of a vessel is also distinct from proving a weapon-launch capability: this trial tested the latter.
What is XV Excalibur?
Excalibur is the Royal Navy’s first extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicle (XLUUV), an experimental 12-metre, 19-tonne demonstrator developed under Project Cetus. Plymouth-based MSubs built it, and the Royal Navy received it in 2025. Its purpose is to test maritime technologies and payloads, not to serve as an operational submarine. When the Navy unveiled it, it said Excalibur would not perform operational duties and would inform future concepts. Royal Navy unveiling account, 2025.

How does this differ from Excalibur’s earlier remote-control demonstration?
In August 2025, during Exercise Talisman Sabre, the Royal Navy reported communicating with and controlling submerged Excalibur in UK waters from an operating centre in Australia, more than 10,000 miles away. That demonstration concerned remote operation and allied interoperability. It was separate from the 2026 torpedo launch and did not itself show a weapon being fired. Royal Navy account, 6 August 2025.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the trial matters
The test shows that a heavyweight weapon developed for crewed submarine use can be mechanically, electrically and digitally integrated with an experimental allied uncrewed vessel, then launched and controlled in a test setting. That is a meaningful capability-development milestone for AUKUS collaboration. It is not yet proof that an uncrewed submarine can replace a crewed one or carry out operational attacks.

Royal Navy First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins said the trials marked “a pivotal moment for AUKUS” and showed what the three partner nations could achieve together. Trial director Lieutenant Commander David Iwanek said the achievement “paves the way for a step change in underwater lethality.” Those are officials’ assessments of the potential significance; the demonstrated result remains a controlled integration and launch trial using an inert, recoverable weapon.
