Astronomers report detecting natural radio emission from Beta Pictoris b, a giant planet outside our solar system—not a message from aliens. The September 2026 preprint describes recurring, highly circularly polarized bursts and persistent emission observed with South Africa’s MeerKAT radio array. The signals may also reveal the strength of the planet’s magnetic field near their source.

What did astronomers detect?

Kevin N. Ortiz Ceballos, Edo Berger, and Yvette Cendes report what they describe as the first direct detection of auroral radio emission from an exoplanet: Beta Pictoris b. Their September 2026 paper is an arXiv preprint, not a finding that should be described as independently confirmed or peer-reviewed on the evidence currently established here. The authors’ report and its details are available in the preprint.

The team used MeerKAT, a radio telescope array in South Africa, and reports both recurring bursts and persistent radio emission. The observed frequencies range from 0.85 to 3.5 GHz. The term “alien planet” in headlines means a planet beyond our solar system; it does not mean astronomers detected an alien civilization.

Does the signal mean aliens were detected?

No. The authors interpret the emission as a natural aurora-related process, not artificial communication. In their explanation, charged particles produce radio waves through an effect called the electron cyclotron maser instability. The finding is about a planet’s natural radio emission and magnetic environment, not evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

What can the radio waves tell us about the planet’s magnetic field?

The authors infer a magnetic field of at least 1.25 kilogauss at the radio emission source. In the proposed emission mechanism, the highest observed frequency constrains the field strength where the radio waves originate. That makes the figure a model-based inference from the emission—not a direct measurement of the field across the entire planet.

What is established—and what remains uncertain?

The preprint reports the observing array, the recurring polarized bursts and persistent emission, the 0.85–3.5 GHz frequency range, and the inferred field strength at the source. These are claims made in a recent preprint. Independent follow-up and the paper’s current peer-review status are not established by the available sources, so the result is best described as a reported finding rather than a settled confirmation.
