JEDEC’s current listed DDR5 SDRAM standard is JESD79-5D:2025, published November 1, 2025. It sets engineering requirements for DDR5 devices; it does not guarantee that a particular CPU and motherboard can run every DDR5 capacity, module type, or speed. For a purchase, platform compatibility matters as much as the memory kit’s headline specifications.
What changed in the current DDR5 specification?
JEDEC’s standards catalogue lists JESD79-5D:2025 as the current DDR5 SDRAM specification and says it supersedes the 2024 JESD79-5C.01_v1.31 edition. JEDEC describes its scope as defining DDR5 features and functionality, AC and DC characteristics, packages, and ball and signal assignments.

That is an engineering baseline for DDR5 devices, not a compatibility guarantee for all memory kits and platforms. A motherboard’s memory support and the CPU’s memory controller determine which module configurations and operating speeds are supported in a particular system.
Does the standard establish a maximum capacity or speed?
The information available from the current standard listing does not provide a complete, verified table of maximum module capacities or every speed bin. The accessible 2024 preview identifies DDR5-3200 speed-bin material, but it is not a substitute for the current 2025 edition. Do not infer a maximum capacity or universal speed limit from the standard’s title or from one product announcement; consult JEDEC and the relevant CPU and motherboard documentation for the configuration you plan to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Dynamic RGB Lighting: Individually addressable RGB lighting delivers vibrant effects through a sleek, understated panoramic diffuser
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
One commercial example is Micron/Crucial’s 2025 announcement of DDR5 CUDIMM and CSODIMM products with operation reported up to 6,400 MT/s. That is a product-family specification, not a universal ceiling for DDR5. MT/s means million transfers per second; it is a transfer rate, not the memory clock frequency.
How to compare DDR5 capacity and speed
Evaluate a kit as a complete configuration rather than choosing by its largest capacity or highest transfer-rate label alone. Check these details against your exact CPU and motherboard:
- Total and per-module capacity: Confirm both that the system supports the total amount and that it supports the capacity of each individual module.
- Transfer rate: Compare the rated MT/s with the speeds listed for your CPU and motherboard. An advertised profile may require compatible platform support and configuration.
- Module type: Verify that the motherboard accepts the kit’s form factor and type, such as UDIMM, CUDIMM, or CSODIMM.
- Timings and voltage: Check these alongside the transfer rate; a higher MT/s figure alone does not describe the full operating configuration.
- Platform support: Review the CPU memory-controller specifications and the motherboard vendor’s memory support list for the exact processor, module configuration, and intended settings.
For a purchase, compare a DDR5 desktop memory kit with the support information for your specific system, rather than assuming any DDR5 kit is interchangeable.

What are UDIMM, CUDIMM, and CSODIMM?
These names identify different DDR5 module types; they are not interchangeable labels for speed or capacity. The Micron/Crucial product announcement documents commercial CUDIMM and CSODIMM products, but the cited information does not establish universal motherboard support for either type. Confirm the exact module type against the platform’s documentation before buying.

The practical choice is therefore platform-specific: the standard defines device requirements, while the system determines which supported module type, capacity, and operating settings you can use.
