What do the five years of EE Awards Asia winners reveal about electronics innovation in Asia? Taken together, the 2021–2025 awards offer a longitudinal industry snapshot: priorities moved from dependable connectivity and low-power devices toward greener engineering, electric vehicles, advanced semiconductors, and AI-enabled systems. The awards are not a product-buying list; their changing categories and honors also show how recognition expanded from products and companies toward platforms, people, and the wider electronics ecosystem.

How the five years compare

The clearest way to read the awards is across three dimensions: what technical problem was prominent, which layer of the industry was being recognized, and how the program chose to recognize it. The annual themes below are drawn from EE Times Taiwan’s 2026 retrospective; participation figures and program details are attributed to the contemporaneous EE Times Asia reports.

Year Technical priority in the awards narrative Participation signal Recognition model
2021 Connectivity, IoT, MCUs, 5G, and low-power operation Not stated (EE Times Taiwan, 2026) Product, company, and executive recognition; an EE Professional Award was established, with selection involving ASPENCORE analysts and online readers and users across Asia (EE Times Taiwan / ASPENCORE, 2021)
2022 Green engineering More than 400 nominations from 137 companies (EE Times Asia, 2022) Company, product, people, startup, and spotlight categories
2023 Electric vehicles and third-generation semiconductors Not stated (EE Times Taiwan, 2026) Technology and career recognition, including a lifetime-achievement honor
2024 Technology platforms, smart manufacturing, cybersecurity, AI, cloud computing, and networking Over 400 submissions from nearly 170 companies worldwide across 36 categories (EE Times Asia, 2024) Expanded platform and ecosystem coverage, including analyst awards
2025 AI PCs, edge AI, and AI-enabled endpoints within a consolidated electronics ecosystem Nearly 10,000 engineers engaged through online voting (EE Times Asia, 2025) A Most Influential Organization Award was added; the anniversary report named NXP the “Biggest Winner of the Five-Year Anniversary”

What changed from year to year

2021: dependable connections and efficient devices

The inaugural program coincided with the pandemic, when reliable network access had immediate importance. Its award narrative emphasized IoT, microcontrollers, 5G, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi combination system-on-chips, and ultra-low-power operation. Read together, these priorities point to a practical foundation: electronics needed to connect reliably while operating efficiently.

2022: engineering with sustainability in view

The second edition foregrounded green engineering while retaining a broad mix of company, product, people, startup, and spotlight categories. That combination matters: sustainability was presented not as a single component category, but as a concern that could apply across organizations, technologies, and emerging businesses.

2023: electrification and new semiconductor materials

The retrospective identifies simultaneous momentum in electric vehicles and third-generation semiconductors. The pairing reflects two connected but distinct fronts: changing vehicle powertrains and semiconductor technologies intended for demanding power and performance applications. It signals a shift from connectivity as the central story toward the hardware underpinning electrification and more advanced systems.

2024: recognition widens to platforms and systems

The 2024 program’s expanded coverage reached beyond individual products into technology platforms and areas such as smart manufacturing, cybersecurity, AI, cloud computing, and networking. The inclusion of analyst awards also broadened the types of judgments represented. This is a meaningful change in scale: as products depend more on software, infrastructure, and secure integration, innovation is harder to describe through a component or chip alone.

2025: AI becomes an endpoint and ecosystem story

The 2025 retrospective places edge AI, AI PCs, and AI-enabled endpoints at the forefront. These are not one interchangeable category: AI PCs describe a device class, while edge AI refers to processing closer to where data is generated, and AI-enabled endpoints can include other connected devices. Together, they indicate that AI had become a cross-cutting design priority for electronics products and platforms. The addition of an organizational honor further reflects attention to influence beyond individual products.

Why the individual honors matter

The awards also connect technical progress to the people whose work shaped it. Burn-Jeng Lin was recognized for lithography work in 2022; Simon Min Sze received a lifetime-achievement honor in 2023 for foundational contributions to non-volatile memory; and Chenming Hu was honored in 2024 for pioneering 3D FinFET technology. These examples span manufacturing processes, memory foundations, and transistor architecture. They show how the program’s people-focused recognition can place current industry priorities in the context of engineering work developed over many years.

How to interpret the awards as an industry snapshot

  • Technical priority: Track the shift from connectivity and energy efficiency to sustainability, electrification, advanced semiconductors, and AI. These themes indicate what the program foregrounded in each year, not a complete ranking of every industry investment.
  • Innovation layer: Look at whether recognition centers on a component, chip, tool, platform, system, or ecosystem. The expansion into platforms, infrastructure, and organizations suggests that the awards increasingly treated integration as part of innovation.
  • Recognition model: Compare product and company awards with honors for people, startups, technology platforms, analysts, and organizations. A broader model can capture more kinds of contribution, though it also makes year-to-year comparisons less like-for-like.

Participation figures add context but should not be treated as a single growth series: the reports use different terms and measures, including nominations, submissions, and online voting. The 2022 and 2024 counts describe entries or nominations, while the 2025 figure describes engineers engaged through voting. They show scale and participation, not directly comparable measures of industry growth.

What the five-year arc says—and what it does not

The overall arc is from resilient connectivity toward a broader account of electronics innovation that includes sustainability, vehicle electrification, semiconductor advances, AI-enabled products, and the platforms around them. Just as important, the program’s recognition model widened over time, making the awards useful for examining both technical priorities and the industry’s changing definition of where innovation happens.

That makes EE Awards Asia valuable as a curated historical lens, not a comprehensive census of Asian electronics or proof that one technology displaced another. The annual themes overlap in practice: connected devices still need efficient components, electric vehicles still rely on semiconductor advances, and AI endpoints depend on platforms and networks. The strongest reading is therefore one of changing emphasis and expanding scope, rather than a sequence in which each new theme replaces the last.

The 2025 ceremony report expressed the program’s mission as “Shaping the Future with the Electronics Industry; Transforming the World with Engineers!” (EE Times Asia, 2025). Across the five-year span, the award history gives that statement a concrete shape: the recognized story broadens from products and dependable connections to engineering leadership, platforms, and organizational influence.
